Found a filthy little 2235 at GW, some Q's

Ingo

Too Poor For This
Sunday night my girlfriend wanted to go to Goodwill and I was happy to accompany her. Walked in, went straight to the electronics section, and started my cursory walk-through. They had a lot of new stuff that I hadn't seen yet so my eyes were busy for quite a while. The first thing I saw was a giant-sized Fisher receiver. It was big and heavy but looked like junk (plastic knobs and such). So I looked at all the DVD players CD changers and BPC. Saw a little Onkyo analog receiver, figured I'd leave it for someone else.

As I was walking away I looked down on the bottom rack and saw another silver face. When I saw the MARANTZ on the top my heart started to flutter. It's been quite a while since I had a good GW find. It was SUPER filthy, and was missing the pushbutton for the FM de-emphasis but was only marked $30. I walked it over to my girlfriend with the cart. She reminded me that we had a few 20% off coupons at home, so I went and grabbed them and brought them back. $24.93 out the door. YAY!

So I got it home and pulled the top off and blew out the bulk of the bunnies with my own wind power. Fired it up to see what I was in for. No lights right off except the function light. Turned it to FM and the pointer lit up. I was figuring on some burnt bulbs, but not all. I hooked up a speaker to test the outputs before doing a deep clean and Deoxit treatmeant. Good news: good output in all channels.

Well, now it's been deep cleaned deox'd and I need to find a push button, all fuse lamps, and if there is someway to replace the STEREO indicater light then that too although the latter doesn't appear to be burnt out, but I do get FM stereo and the FM muting works and such.

Does anyone know where I can start looking for a local source for the lights (Phoenix, AZ)? It has really cleaned up well and I would like to get it cosmetically whole before I lose the impetus.

Be sure to post before and afters! :thmbsp: Nice score!

My digicam wasn't available for the before pics. Just imagine someone leaving a 2235 outside on their patio in Phoenix (It's a little dusty here) for 30 years and then taking it to GW. There was actually dry mud caked in the screws on the bottom plate.

I'll post some pics mañana.

Marantz 2235

I have found bulbs on ebay for sale both individual and whole kits at a reasonable price. I have a 2235B myself and am well pleased.

Just contact AK member dgwojo for lamps. He'll make sure that you get the correct lamps for the 2235. You don't want to get the wrong stereo lamp, the MPX chip can be damaged with an improper lamp. BTW, that stereo lamp solders in.

Thank you everyone for the info. The stereo lamp seems to be rivetted into that little plastic guide. Where is the solder joint? I'll have to take a look at it again to see what's up. It did not appear to be burned up, which made me worry.

BTW, Jailtime. I plan on pairing the 2235 with my EPI 100Ws when I get those resolved. I got a nice pair but dropped one of the tweeters and broke the magnet away from the flange.

Is the power of your 2235B enough for them?

Does your stereo lamp work on AUX? If not, it's burned out. I have a 2235 here, just cracked it open to take a look. That's a soft rubber socket that the stereo lamp is in, it should pull out with a little effort. The lamp has wires that tie to J211 and JY11, I think, over by the tuning wheel. You'll definitely have to find this lamp from dgwojo. Sorry about the confusion on the solder joint, I was thinking of my 2235B. Much easier to replace the stereo lamp in it than the non-B 2235.

EDIT: Just saw your other post. Yes, the 2235 will drive the EPI 100s fine. You'll like it.

I just ordered all of the lamps (thanks to AKer dgwojo) and a push button that I can hopefully glue on where the shaft broke off on the FM de-emphasis switch. Anyone know what would be the best kind of glue to use for plastic to plastic bond? I was thinking of the type that I used to use to glue together plastic models. Can't wait to get this thing fully functional again.

On the stereo indicator lamp, I assume the best thing is to splice into the old leads?

Yeah, I'd try some model glue. Not like you'll ever use that switch, it's pretty much for cosmetics. That's a good idea to just splice into the old leads on the stereo lamp. Much easier than untangling that big mess all the way back.

Thanks Audiokarma, especially Jailtime! I got 'er all lit up like a Christmas tree and in complete working order.

AKer dgwojo is first class all the way for lamp sales. Not only did he sell me the lamps I needed for the cheapest price around, but he threw in some heat shrink and solder so I could splice in the stereo indicator lamp as cleanly as possible. I urge ANYONE needing lamps to use dgwojo.

Here she is:

Lookin' good! So do you like it with the EPIs?

EPIs are out of commission at the moment. I dropped one of the tweeters and it broke the motor away from the plastic flange and ripped the wires off the voice coil. I have one in transit right now.

I also need to recap them and refoam the woofers before they'll be ready to go.

I am really looking forward to hearing the combo. It does (the 2235), however, sound great with my Mach IIs! Mid-Bass anyone?

Until you get your wood case built, you should put something between the receiver and the table so that it can get some airflow through it. Set it up on some small wooden blocks or something.
BTW, nice find.
