Frazier Mark Vs in the house.

pmsummer

simul justus et peccator
Picked them up today. $135 the pair. Cabs need attention (edges and corners straight, just some scratches... some deep), but the walnut veneer looks good. Should restore well.

I'll replace the binding posts (which are those hideous spring-loaded thingies Winslow Burhoe liked so much), but leave the caps alone until I get a feel for Piezo tweeters.

First impression (iPod/T-Amp): Very nice, great bass (they are just slightly bigger and a bit heavier than my AR-3as), great sound stage. It's a two-way XO (bass and mids) with a wide open tweet that can't go below 4K anyway. The tweet and mids have L-pads/pots controlling them. Unfortunately, they aren't mirrored. They are REAL efficient.

They'll boot about three pair of speakers out of the house (JBL Lancer 99s, EPI 150s and one pair of EPI 100s), I'm pretty sure.

Got's to find some Frazier speaker badges.

I just received a set of Snell Type K from the same seller. I wish he had been a little more forthright in his description. They need foam, cloth and a refinish, but no crushed corners!

Yours look great! How do they compare the the Monte Carlos?

Sorry you didn't get a good description. I called him and really talked my way around them, and then picked them up in person. He's a retired psychologist, and well, you never can be too sure about shrinks and speakers. ;)

I'll need cloth, too, but I may just leave them exposed to scare my friends with the tweeter.

Well, they're twice as big, and more than twice as heavy. Similar Helmholtz Resonator design. They're floorstanders, while the Monte Carlos are true "bookshelf" speakers. Much bigger sound. The Montes are charming, while I can tell these are manly speakers. Remind me a little of Klipsch Fortes (which I never liked much), but without the honking mid.

I've been keeping a close eye on your Frazier threads, due to their high efficiency. The Monte Carlos have piqued my interest.

Btw, the seller wasn't deceptive. Just omissive.

PM: Got tubes? Try tube amplification on your Mark V. 10-15wpc is enough to get the tone -- very nice! I also ran my Mark Vs (with horn tweeter) with a H/K 330B, and that was another nice match.

Nice deal!

The plan is to use my little Scott 299-D tube amp with these, but it's currently assigned to my Frazier Monte Carlos. The Mk V may get assigned to the MAC 4100 as part of a AR-3a, Double Original Advent, Frazier Mk V threesome.

Or... I may take the Monte Carlos and use them as a third channel for the both the Scott 299/Frazier Mk V system (the Scott has a 3rd channel output) and the MA-6100/Cornwall (using a Dynaco 3rd channel box).

The Piezo tweeter on the Mk Vs sounds like a very directional EPI inverted dome. No screech (I knew there shouldn't be, but I have always feared Piezo tweeters).

>Never can tell about shrinks and speakers<

right on, bro. speakers and shrinks. those look pretty cool, pm. how do these guys know who the seller is? was it an ebay deal? if it was in our area, i'd love to know who the retired psychologist was

How do strings sound, especially cellos? If i like how they do that, I like em/

I was playing some Baroque viol and harpsichord music off the iPod yesterday, and yes, it sounded good, but I wouldn't call it "critical" listening by any means.

Jack Frazier (the speaker's design/manufacturer) had a close relationship with many members of the Dallas Symphony, and with several Dixieland jazz musicians (Pete Fountain and Al Hirt, IIRC) . He never made specifically "rock" speakers, but had a good ear for accurate reproduction.

In a day or two (after I replace the speaker posts, and after my wife comes down out of the tree she climbed up after seeing new speakers in the house), I'll hook the Mk Vs up to the Scott or the MAC 4100, and do some more critical listening than what the iPod/T-Amp combo afford...

I'll play some Jordi Savall. :thmbsp:

Jim,

I wondered when you'd take the bait. ;)

I'll PM you the guy's ebay info. I've watched his auctions and ebay store for a couple of years. He gets stuff from storage auctions. Seemed nice, and was accommodating in pick-up/delivery. He lives west of Ft. Worth, but met me at 360 and I-30 in Arlington.

He also had a pair of "C.A.D. One" Fraziers for me to look at. They were about the size of the Monte Carlos, had old-style screw terminals on the back, small horn and 8" bass, with a round port out the front. They were vinyl clad, and had a "commercial" look to them. I didn't bite.
