Its a good album. I'd be interested in comparing an old copy to the fresh, just to see what sort of difference it makes.
That's an album I've never gotten to sound quite the way I want it to, no matter what version I try. I have the original double-LP, the original US Polygram CD (mastered by Dennis Drake), and the old Mofi gold CD version. I always had trouble getting the live stuff on the original vinyl to sound as open as the original, pink-labeled "Fillmore East" vinyl (I don't really even listen to that one very-much either because Betts' guitar is too-loud in the mix, something that was somehow fixed on the Mofi "Fillmore East" CD). But mid '70's vinyl is sometimes hard to track.
For "Eat A Peach", I usually split time between the Polygram and MoFi CD versions, and for "Fillmore" I usually just listen to the MoFi disc. I have an '80's vinyl pressing of "Fillmore" that I haven't listened to in over twenty years, and I think I'm gonna' try that one and see if maybe they did something about Betts' guitar in the mix (It's weird because the live stuff on the "Eat A Peach" vinyl doesn't have that problem). Bums me out too because the vinyl on my 1st pressing is absolutely-mint and dead-quiet, but Betts' guitar is just too-distracting for me (I have a vinyl-rip of that pressing, and it's got the same problem... It's just the way it was mixed... Tom Dowd must have been a little schnockered or something).
I'll have to give my original "Eat A Peach" vinyl another listen. I've made recent changes to my vinyl-rig, so perhaps it'll sound a lot better.
*EDIT* - Listening to the original EAP vinyl right now... Yeah, you're right. The live stuff DOES sound better. I guess my vinyl-rig is tracking it better now (The 1019 is perfect for vinyl up to around '71 or '72, and then they start getting a little harder to track). That's good because I love "Mountain Jam", and this sounds better than the MoFi CD. Oh well, looks like I gained another I can listen to more-often now. Go figure. Very-cool though. Was meaning to give this one another shot (I've gotten better at setup/alignment than I was in the past, so this has been happening with a lot of my '70's stuff).
Never mind...
