Found this Fisher console at a garage sale this Sat. morning. Paid $17.00 for it. It works great and has great sound..really pulls in the stations. I liked the small size. Does anyone know the model # as there is not one on the console anywhere. This mono setup has 10 tubes and 2 EL84's for the output. The speaker is a 15 inch and looks like a Jenson. The seller called me to say he found the aditional speaker that came with this radio that has two smaller speakers (midrange and tweeter) and hooks up to the terminal on the rear of the cabinet. I never knew mono could sound so good!

Looks like the typical "overbuilt" Fisher stuff from the good ol' days. I've got a similar Fisher mono that I've been looking for a mate for. They do sound incredible, and I tend to give a lot of the credit to the BIG power supplys (and of course the great output iron). Great find :thmbsp:

Thanks for the notes guys...It's a neat little mono Fisher I'm guessing from the very late 50's-early 60's. The chassis has R-20 on it but I don't think thats the model # but the chassis #. I recapped the chassis which was very easy and I still can't believe the sound from the dual EL-84's...LOTS of deep bass and smooth mids/highs with the external speaker attached. I'm going to use this in my garage so I'll have tube sound wherever I go! :D

$17.00! What a deal. It's a thing of beauty, for sure. I love that wood face and dial. I'd have spent $100 if I saw it. Good luck

What a great looking Fisher! And being mono you've got the freedom to place it where it will look its best and not have to worry about stereo imaging problems or being trapped in the sweet spot. The speakers may be its only weakness. I recently purchased a 1960 Fisher Premiere console with its original 3-way Jensens. While they sound very nice; when tested, their frequency response was very irregular. They have a huge peak around 80-100Hz which I kind of like but not much energy over 8,000Hz and a large gap around 3-4,000Hz.

I have ordered a pair of full-range Audio Nirvana 12s which should, based on the numbers, work well in the 2.8 square foot enclosures. I'll report back when I get them installed - they're due in tomorrow. I need to get some acoustic damping on the inside of the enclosures and experiment with porting. It should be fun. But I envy your mono Fisher.

Hi tapehead47..Thanks for your message..I find it very nice looking as well and the size is right  I think I would have spent a hundred as well.
Hey Red1...Thanks for your note..Your probably right about the speakers..seems strange that there's a 15 in such a small sealed cabinet. If I remove the back screws and tilt the back out on top the bass acually gets much better so a tuned port would help. Also because of the small size they put the mid and tweeter in a separate matching box which was bad as it could have gotten lost over the years. Everything was original and it was still working which shows how well these were built. Did your console come with 12" woffers? Let me know how your new speakers work out. I'd love to see photos as I really like these older fisher consoles :thmbsp:

My console has 12s, 8s, & 3s and for playing albums from the late 50s and 60s the frequency response really tends to hide surface noise. I'm not sure if that was intentional or is due to its age - but; except for the hole around 3-4kHz, it seems to perfectly compensate for my hearing losses. Its story and a few pictures can be found here:

Hello Red1.Very nice! :thmbsp: I sure like your cabinet and from reading the information it looks like there were quite a few consoles that Fisher put out. I wonder what the President looks like? From the info EL37 gave on the Fisher speaker numbers it looks like mine was made in 1957.....Anyway you found a nice one and I'm glad you kept it intact!
