Good deal - Large Advents

Well I picked up a pair of newly refoamed large advents this afternoon. They are a little rough but during the quick audition...sounded very nice. I can't wait to get them in the house for a really good listen. They were advertised, and probably are, utility speakers. How do you tell? These have a nice wood finish although a little scratched. Whats the difference between Utility and Regular Large Advents?

Utilities have a vinyl veneer where as the regular ones have a wood veneer. Yours are the wood types. Very nice. Clean them up, recap and enjoy

I recently purchased a pair and then bought a second pair for stacking. Awesome speakers for the price. Both sets are utility cabs. I did recap the cross overs JIC. Enjoy.

1975 or newer examples.

Whoever did the refoam did a good job and it looks like they used the correct surrounds.

Lastplace, who has the cover of a great album for his avater, is right. Howard's should do wonders for the finish.

Yes those are beauty's !!! looking at the surrounds on those,they appear to be inverted. Is that common practice with the Advent LF driver's ?? Just curious

Yup:thmbsp: Thats how they came. Any other way should be redone.

It's only the original masonite woofers that have the inverted roll surrounds.

All the rest are regliar. \:^)

Feed-n-wax works wonders.

The only thing that could be incorrect re refoaming is the dust caps. They appear to be paper.

If they are, they should be changed to the original gauze type.

If they are already the gauze type, ignore this post.

I reference to a re-cap....should I just replace the existing value caps or is there different values that are recommended?

go with what they came with. That will bring it back to what they originally were supposed to sound like.

What are the dark areas on the right speaker? plant pot stains?

I love Feed-N-Wax!! I have used it on all my other wood stuff! I can't seem to be able to find the Restore-O-Finish up here in Canada though.

Kirk57....I think they are plant stains! I might get the sandpaper on it and see if it comes out.

I have 3 sets and all are recapped. They do sound much better. The biggest difference in recapping was when I did some KLH Model Seventeens. It was night and day. The Large Advents do sound much better after though.
