Good results with "Golden Ratio" speaker placement

I have a square listening room....yes about as difficult as you can get. I was reading someone on the Dynaudio website about placement in difficult and square rooms. The Golden Ratio is a ratio of five units from one wall and 8 units from the other wall. I used a line of tape to place the line on the carpet and then started moving my speakers around. In my case i used 5 units from the back wall and 8 units from the side wall. What is working for me is 60 inches from the side wall and 37.5 inches from the rear wall...a near perfect 8:5 ratio.

Just spending a few hours messing around got me a pretty big improvement in sound in my room.

If you are having trouble getting the most from your speakers in your room, I would encourage you to watch this video.

The discussion specifically about a square room starts at about 15 minutes in. The whole video is pretty interesting though

Thanks for the video link, glad to hear that it allowed you to improve your speaker placement as well as the sound. :music:

Doesn't mean you're done though ... just in the ballpark. Not saying that's not a good thing tho. ;-}

Surprising how big a difference slight placement changes, including toe, can make, both in imagining and sound quality. I'd suggest marking the current position with painters tape, then having some fun with it. Keep in mind your "sweet spot" may not mirror the room.

I used a different method to set my speakers and for grins just measured how they are placed. 32 in from back wall and 55 from the side walls. Pretty close to 5:8!

Time consuming, but free! Appreciate the video and the tip.

Totally agree! I have painters tape marking the line that represented the 5:8 ratio as well as 8:5 ratio and also the 1/5th from each wall (as discussed in the video). I am experimenting with toe in as well.
