Got a very minor hosing by an ebay seller

Rocking somewhere
I'm going to skip the specifics. From time to time, chit happens, and I guess it was my turn. I still like ebay, but ran into a cheat this time.

Here's the story. I bought an audio gizmo that needs a remote to be really useful. It popped up on ebay and had a $20 BIN option. Remote included. It had only been on Ebay for a few hours, and I bought it with BIN. It was an excellant deal. Not "score", but a small deal not to be passed up.

Two days later I see that my payment had been refunded. WTF? A message with the refund through paypal says

"sorry, when putting batteries in the remote, I broke one of the contacts off the remote. I've refunded your money ($27)."

This guy never contacted me about the situation. I sent him a message saying that I could fix the remote, and it wasn't a problem. He responds,

"Sorry, I already threw the remote in the trash."

Sent the guy another message saying I'm still interested in the main unit, asking if he'd take $15 for it, or I might even pay the original price. (replacement remotes are available). He responds,

"Sorry, I meant to say I threw the WHOLE setup away.

Ummm...right. All pretty obvious to me. Dude had 100% FB, about 60 transaction. He mainly buys and sells audio equipment. He knew he farked up when someone else offered him probably double or triple his BIN.

Yup, I'm not out any money, but I still got hosed. Contemplating negative or neutral feedback. No proof of any wrong doing, but I know what happened. Sent him a final message asking how much he ended up getting. Also told him Karma was a bitch. :)

well you got your money back promptly.

And it wasn't a TON of money. Whatever his reason is, you lost 27$ for 2 days. I don't know if that is call for negative feedback.

That's kinda iffy. I mean, he did refund your money so technically you're no worse for wear. Leaving him negative feedback because of something that you can't prove would seem to be pushing the envelope a little.

You're both right. Just smoldering a little. I'll probably let it go.

Hope he's not an AK member...

You had a contract. He broke it. In a perfect world, you could buy the thing elsewhere (for more money) and them sue him and collect the difference.

Wildly impractical in the real world, of course. Which means you just forget it and move on....

In a perfect world the seller would be roasting on a spit for being a deceptive fraud.

The almost "good" thing here is that the first step the seller took was to make the buyer monetarily whole again.

I too would be pissed as the seller set the price with a BIN and the OP bid and paid in good faith, in a moral and ethical world the only right thing for the seller to do was to promptly tender the goods to their new owner.

Sadly, this world is neither perfect, moral, or ethical. Ebay is full of shitheads who don't know the meaning of the words honest or fair, sooner or later we all cross paths with one. Be thankful you got your 27 bucks back without hassle or delay and move on, it's what's in your very best interest at the end of the day.

Well said. Venting on AK is my only relief.

Hey Kevin - hang in there pal. I feel your pain, I do. It sucks to suspect you got yanked out of a good deal. I had it happen to me with a TT. I won it for cheap and the seller immediately refunded my payment claiming he "dropped it down the stairs taking it to his car." I told him I was only interested in a couple parts and to send it anyway. Never heard from him again.

But sometimes deals like this go the other way too. I had a seller email me a week after I paid for an item below market value telling me there was a problem with the unit. He was going to refund my money and relist the item as a repair/parts unit so I promptly emailed him back stating I was willing to accept the unit as-is since I immediately paid him after winning the auction and he made no contact with me until seven days later. He called me and we discussed the issue and we mutually aggreed to fulfill the auction by shipping me the unit plus he refunded me some money on top of it. The unit arrived as described with the exact issue he brought to my attention so his yank was legit. We both walked away from the deal happy. Go figure.

Anyway....vent away - it helps as I'm sure many of us have experienced it first hand and can lend you an ear.

Negative feedback, immediately. Report him to ebay as a non-performing seller as well.
Ditto. Just had exactly the same thing happen to me in he last few days with a Pioneer CT-F1250 tape deck. Left negative feed back as soon as the a..h... returned my payment. Next thing I know he is on the phone to me saying his 80 year old father thought it was best to return the money after it "broke" suddenly just before he was due to post it. Told him I had no evidence that he had an 80 year old father.

Furthermore, he's not getting his ebay seller fees returned either, so the a..h... paid $20 for the privilege of getting negative feedback from me.

you should post his ebay screen name,so that noone here has to suffer the same fate. There should be a list of these people,of whom we should not deal with. That sux, dude.

Agreed. Ask yourself... was it a positive transaction? Don't think so. Neutral? Might have been a neutral if he communicated with you before killing the deal. Are you pissed, do you feel jerked around? I'd describe those as NEGATIVE emotions.

Ding him with a negative, he's earned it. If eBay had a more meaningful 1 - 10 scale, maybe it'd only rate a 3 or 4, just below neutral. But they don't and that isn't your fault.

I won't post his ebay name. It's probably against the AK rules, and I understand that. However, I'll reply to PM's. As I said, after reading his feedback info, he buys and sells audio gear. I lost no money on this deal, but the principle pisses me off. I wouldn't do this to a buyer. If some of you want to avoid this seller, I'd be happy to let you know "who" to avoid.

I'm a bit concerned, as others have said, about leaving negative feedback when we do not know for certain that this was an unethical transaction. Or perhaps I missed something? I'm more inclined to log this in the internal 'avoid seller' memory bank and move on.

My 2 cents.

Yes, you are missing something. An honest seller will always offer you the chance to go ahead with the transaction as a reduced price to indicate his honesty and / or offer a partial refund. Alternatively he will offer to produce good evidence of the problem.

A dishonest seller will simply refund and not give you that option. He will also refuse to offer evidence of the problem.

I agree. There is no proof of a dishonest seller, but it is pretty obvious that he is dishonest. A simple picture would show if it was broken or not. Maybe he's done this to others. I'm not much of an ebay guy, but I'd leave a negative rating if it was me. People that are dishonest etc. and aren't held accountable is a pretty big pet peeve of mine, though, so maybe a negative rating isn't called for.
