Got Wood?

My friend Sansui Sam was here a week ago and posed an interesting thought, My 8080 cases are the vinyl covered plywood looking ones, with damaged vinyl, has anyone ever peeled this stuff off and refinished the underlaying wood?
I have an older 9090 case on one reciever, refinished it looks stunning, if I could get that vinyl crap off I may try to fix up the spare 8080 case.

do an AK search on "merrylander", then drool over the Sansui cabs he has refinished. Latest efforts include an 890, the Euro blackface version of the 8080, and others. Be sure to check out some of the Yamaha cases in black walnut, sapele, cherry. Even his vinyl replacements look good.

There have been several members that have peeled off the vinyl and refinisned the wood. Here's a link to one done by nobody2.

The cases can be refinished in paint, new vinyl or wood veneer. Cases can also be repaired. A common repair is to replace damaged corners from units that have been dropped. The bad corner can be cut out and a new piece of wood patched in. The case is then re-veneered and looks like new.

The Sansui vinyl is in two layers; there is a semi-transparent layer that gives the woodgrain effect, under that is a plain brown layer that is harder to remove. I use a heat gun to peel the old vinyl. However, if I was going to cover it with the PE vinyl I would be inclined to leave the plain brown layer in place. If I was using real wood veneer I would definitely peel off both layers.

I've gotta pot full of cases and side-panels to do myself. Lets keep a running progress and process interaction going. Maybe we can suck a bunch of others into doing the same.

Once I'm comfortable, I'm gonna re-veneer 4 sets of HPM-100s, maybe in red oak, instead of the original walnut. Gonna start simple though, with a set of RT-1020L side panels, then I'll move on to my new CT-F1000 case.

I have an Technics SA818 that has the same problem. I am going to trash the mdf and cut replacements with the same dimensions/profile with real walnut. I owned the 616 in 1982 and didn't really like the vinyl then. The previous owner of the 818 (I purchased in 2003/ebay) attempted (poorly) to re-vinyl.

I thought about veneer, but the PITA factor is higher than cutting new panels. Should be easy enough since the sides are simply screwed on. The top slides into dados cut into the side panels. The only challenge is the grillwork/inset. I may just cut long through grooves for venting.

After that, I may encase my AU-777!

I've got a Kenwood KT-7001/KA-7002/KC-6060 combo I was thinking of replacing the wood sides with burled walnut.

Then adding matching sides to the rest of the stack.

I some cases you may be able to successfully peel off the old vinyl veneer without the use of a heat gun.... I was able to do this on a Pioneer SX-880.

I started a thread with pics in the DIY forum a few weeks ago.... but the project is presently stalled.
