Great Heights for speakers

Saw an estate sale today and had to stop. There were 4 big speakers, and everything was half price. $30 for all four. Just one problem. 1 was flush mounted into a wall at about 7 feet. Two of them were on corner mounts above a glass enclosed entry way. The other was on a wall mount I could easily reach. RTR series 3 model four with 12 inch woofer, 3 inch mid and 2 tweeters in vinyl veneer. The other 2 were Realistic mystery boxes that I could only tell had real wood veneer. And they were big. They had a ladder so I was able to get the one out of the wall, and the one Realistic turned out to be an Optimus 400. Prefect shape as they have been out of reach for 30+ years. Rotten surrounds of course. The last one was over the sunken entry, so it was about 25 feet in the air. Had to use the ladder from a balcony and climb over. Luckily I could grab it and hand it off. I got a discount for the bad foam too!

Looks like a great deal! Nice speakers, too bad so much foam is shot. If you're lucky the piezos in those RTRs are real CTS/Motorolas.

I suggest you take a look at the crossovers for the piezo horns in the RTRs. Most manufacturers don't use any crossover, or might try and use a standard crossover, but both ways will sound terrible. Follow the advice in this thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=79659

Real Motorola piezos will sound absolutely wonderful with a proper crossover.

Are those RTR's any good? There is a set locally for sale that i could pick up. Not that i need another set of speakers or anything.

This was in a real big area. Likely 30 FT between speakers. The 2 Optimus 400s faced the same direction. One RTR faced the Optimus, the other was facing the other RTR sort of. Only reason I went for it was they were half price. The Optimus speakers have pristine real wood veneer. They have been way out of reach for likely 30 years. The other 2 are vinyl, and sort of sticky. Foams are all good on the RTR speakers. They seem very efficient. John

Methinks you are a braver man than I (although in view of what you got I am not sure), removing heavy objects from on high!

Nice find! The Optimus speakers alone were worth it. Quick question - what did you take those pics with? If it's a cell phone camera, it's one of the best cell cameras I've seen...
