As the header states. this has been such a joy! I built it from a kit about 8 years ago and other than a minor hiccup, it's been great. I love that I put it together myself, without much previous experience and it performs so well. That's all, just expressing my satisfaction! :), I've Been thinking about some Gold Lions for it, but I haven't pulled the trigger just yet. Still running the Sovtek Kt-88's and they sound fine!IMG_0257.JPG

I have MK3 clones with his VTA boards. Haven't tried Sovtek, but i have tried just about everything else. I have to say the new issue GLs impressed me the least. They are pretty though. I liked their Electro Harmonix KT88 little brothers better. Running a very nice quad of KT88 SED =C= at them moment. Also have a quad of SED =C= 6550. Both of those eclipse the others by a fair bit.

Agreed. Nice amps!

I recently switched from the 5AR4 to the WZ68 SS rectifier in my VTA
ST-70. So far I've been happy with it. Try a NOS 12BH7 in the center driver socket. I really liked it over the various 12AU7's, ECC99's and E80CC's I tried.
I've had very few problems with my VTA amp in the last 13 years.
I lost a crappy JJ 5AR4 early on. Then a driver tube shorted out, and I also lost one KT-77. Other than that its been trouble free for years since.

The 12bh7 sounds interesting, if I remember correctly a telefunken 12au7 is in that spot now. can one be just swapped for the other?

Any recommendations on which brand/style of a 12BH7 to look for?
I just went thru my stash and I have:
3 rca 12bh7a’s
1 tung sol 12bh7
1 Silvania 12bh7a
I will try them on my tester later for values

I'm using Sylvania 12BH7's in my VTA M-125 mono blocks and like them. My ST-70 has Phillips branded Siemens in it. I had a Tungsgram 12BH7 also. They all sound good.
I would go with whichever tests the best.

+2

Also noted a nice improvement with the Sylvania. Pretty budget friendly too.
They are. I bought the Sylvania's from Nesstone. Ive bought various tubes from him and never a dud.
The used test strong are very reasonably priced as well.
His business is only a 40 minute drive from me, so if I order in the morning I get my tubes within two days.
