GX 636 sp. stability issue (7.5ips)

deck will suddenly speed up - could be in the 1st five minutes or after an hour of playing/recording. DeOxe'd pitch cont. & selector sw. Thoughts??

Also - is the capstan supposed to run ALL the time pwr is ON - cuz this one does!

Deoxit also the two speed adjustment pots on the upper control pcb on the left side when looking from behind?

capstan is supposed to run all the time.
 
Beforehand I'd record some test tones on a known good machine (play back wav's with generated 1000Hz tones etc from your computer or burn the wav's to an audio CDr) then you can adjust the tape speed to match afterwards.

This speed adjustment can be done by ear while playing back original source and tape simultaneously. Then you'll get "intermodulation" or beat-tones between both tones. Adjust tape speed until this intermodulation tone reaches as close to zero-beat as possible.

IS there a LUBE point for this motor?? Thanks again...
 
So.... ARE these VR1 and VR2 on that bd.? Also this just in... found a red wire added from motor to the bd outside the stock wire loom.3340s_01.JPG 3340s_02.JPG See pix IF I can figure out this new system for adding jpegs...
 
Yes Ed, VR 1 & VR 2 up underneath the top bd. . . on the Left side viewed from REAR. Mark them w/a SHARP X-acto blade before spray & exercise. Reset to marks. Play 1k test tone from stock tape thru phones while also playing SAME tone on laptop. Adj. VR1 until tones sync. Do the same for VR2 in the other speed using 500Hz. recheck Hi spd. Good.
Record for 3 hrs & monitor off tape.
