I worked on a 17 earlier this year and it definitely benefitted from deoxiting, as I was able to visually examine the swiches before and after, and the deoxit made a huge difference.
If the 17 has the linear slider equalizer controls, they cannot be cleaned because they are heavily (silicon) lubed by the factory to keep out contamination.
Deoxit (d5 or d100) for the switches, d100 to clean the pot's contacts, then faderlube (used to be cailube) to lubricate the pots. Don't forget all the rca plugs.

Markthefixer worked on my garage sale 17 preamp earlier this year. His thorough cleaning definitely fixed my 17 which had becom inoperable because its switches and jacks were dirty/corroded. I had lent my 17 to a friend to use but he returned it to me because it "wouldn't turn on." I played with it a bit but couldn't get it to go through its "start up" sequence until Mark diagnosed it and worked his cleaning magic on it.
Mark also cleverly substituted some LEDs for the incadescent pilot light. While the LEDs will probably outlast the rest of the components.
FWIW, my 17 has a dry "clinical" sound that may benefit from a recapping. Unfortunately, according to Mark, there are 53 caps in the 17. (I base that description on comparisons with my B&K and Sumo Athena which are more warm and musical than the 17.) That said, the 17 is very quiet with an extremely "black" background that seems to surround individual instruments. I have never used its phono section but it is supposed to be one of the 17's strengths based on what others have said.

Which I have used on a regular basis since 1978. It has been an absolutely faithfull workhorse for me all those years. I never noticed any hiss or any other noise from it - and it's still (touch wood) playing nicely and powerfull. I have been using it with JBL 4333A's all these years. These speakers should reveal any noise if it's there. About the sound - hmm - very difficult, but to my taste the Cit 16A is very very good for my set-up...and taste. Many people soundwise disregard the Citation series and also the 16/16A, but I just don't have the same feeling.
I can recommend the 16A without hesitation - but it's a vintage piece, so any owner should consider to have it checked or serviced.

I have a pair of 16's. I have them bridged, and conected to a 17. (I also have an 11 in storage somewhere). I am running them through a pair of Celestion Ditton 551's. Anf for good measure, I have a H/K Eq 8 in the mix.
This is the set up I use for vinyl and RTR.
I also have an A402 that I use to play CD's and for tuner use.
I have always liked to sound and quality that H/K made up to the mid 80's

I got a 19 that have only worked on the left channel for the last 10 years..
Tried fixin it 3 times but it`s been posessed by the devil or something. :tears:
Anyway, I remember trying it out on a Electrovoice speaker and there were absolute silence when pressing pause on the cd player, a sony es model. I used the variable output, no preamp.
Maybe the hissing noice are a dried out capacitor?
