Harman Kardon 330 Lamp Help - FIXED

I have a HK 330 or three thirty and the lamps for the AM, FM, Phono and AUX do not work. The stereo FM works fine as do all the meter and dial lamps. I tried replacing the bulbs with 8v 35Ma lamps and they still don't light. I know the lamps are supposed to be 8v 180Ma but I could not find any. Do these have to be the required 8v 180Ma to work? Someone pulled all the lamps leads off the bulbs and I may even have them wired wrong. Does someone have a HK 330 I can get a picture from showing how these bulbs are wired to the rail?

Where is the power coming from to supply the voltage to the rail and how can I check it?

Lamps Fixed!

Ok. I found the problem. I traced the wiring from the lamp rail and came to conclusion it was not getting contact from the selector switch. I had cleaned the switch several times with spray cleaner over and over but still nothing. One more time this afternoon and a little manipulation of the actual contacts to the rotor and I have lights! :thmbsp: Boy that was fun.

Thank you. I did learn a good lesson. This little HK 330 really blows me a way as far as sound. I am really amazed how great it does sound. I am happy.

What is the difference between the 230 and the 330?

Which 330 do you have? There's a Three Thirty, a 330A, 330B and 330C. They're all similar. My dad has a Three Thirty which was sounding better than my 330A so I'm in the middle of recapping my 330A. Some say the 330B sounds better than the A, some like the 330C which is direct coupled whereas the A and B are capacitor coupled. Don't know anything about a 230.

I need all new bulbs in my 330A so I'm interested what bulbs you found that fit, any tips on replacing them etc. And, I guess I better reclean my selector switch a few times!

Of these little 230A's - Sure is a cute little guy - mellow voice too. Amazed how many of these 70's ss receivers have such a nice warm sound. Too bad FM radio is so crappy. I do some Pandora but mostly FLAC/DAC off hard drive.

I have the 330 Nocturne. That is all it says on the front. I had some bulbs with wires I found in my old stock. Where I got them from I don't remember. I dug the receiver out about a week ago and remembered it needed new bulbs. Looked on the internet to try to find some that would fit but could not find 8v 150mA (not 180mA like I said above) which the SM says the 330A uses. The supplier I normally use for my bulbs was out of stock. Anyway, I put the receiver back on the shelf. The other day I was going through my stock drawers looking for something else and low and behold there where some 8v 35Ma wheat grain lamps with wires. They didn't go where I had put them but somehow they ended up there. They fit good in the rubber boot and I glued them with some contact cement. They are not as bright as I would like, but they'll do. As far as the dial lamps they are fuse lamps. They are a little harder the replace on this 330 because the turner string is secured by a screw that holds the lamps panel on. I tried to gain access from the front but could not because the lamps are covered by a lens that can only be removed from the inside.

Here is what the service manual says for the 330A. Don't know about the 230.

Meter bulbs = 6v 280mA
Function Indicator Bulbs = 8v 150mA
Stereo Indicator Bulb = 14v 80mA

Thanks, perfect. Iam going to see if I can find some of these this morning. Would love to see a pic of your 330, does it say 330 vs Three Thirty? I'm thinking you might have something similar to my dad's which was sounding really good when I last heard it.

Here's a pic. I need a cap for one of the knobs still but everyting works now. It also could use some more cleaning.

Yeah just like my dad's. Nice sounding receiver. Does it actually say Nocturne on it? I never noticed it.

Just wondered, did you see the 8V spec in the manual? I didn't see that. Anyway I ended up with 6V fuse lamps, as that's what came out of it, but then they were all burned out so I guess we'll see. Not so hard to change as I thought they'd be anyway. I might add a resistor inline with them if I get around to it... I like the light pretty dim and they'd last longer.

Hi, I saw this old thread & wondered if you ever found a way to remove the lense from the front of the 330 Nocturne.

I have one whose mode switch is intermittent & needs to be replaced.
For the life of me I can't figure out how to get that faceplate off!

any help would be greatly appreciated!

It has been awhile since I worked on one of these but I can tell you I have removed a lot of face plates and most of them have screws on the bottom, top or sides. Remove the top cover first. After removing the cover and the screws you have to remove the knobs. On hard to remove knobs and to keep from bending the shafts use two teaspoons on each side of the knob and gently pry them off. This will give you the leverage you need and will not damage the face. Take a picture, or line the knobs up on your work bench so you will not forget how the went on. There are usually nuts that must be removed also that are screwed to the posts like the bass, volume or selector switch. Use a nut driver or a pair of pliers in the large position to remove these. If you use pliers be sure to be gentle. They may slip or come off the nut and scratch the face. Once you think you have everything removed pull the face plate off gently.

Again, it's been awhile since I worked on a 330 so directions are vague but this may give you an idea.
