have a chance to buy a harmon kardon pm665 tomorrow for 90 cdn. anyone have any experience with one of these?

Yes; they're VERY good amplifiers. Almost infinite current capacity without the usual "solid-state glare" that accompanies many "big moose" transistor amps.

Is it a plain PM665 or a PM665Vxi? It's not a huge deal, it's just that the Vxi model has about 30% more output power. IIRC, the 665 is about 80w/ch, and the 665Vxi is about 110 or so...

For $90 CDN (what's that, about $65 USD?) I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it is in good shape. Hard to go wrong with that one.

Looks like you'd be lucky with either! I picked up an L-410, she sounds good!

I recently got one of these from a coworker who came by it from a donation from the original owner. It was missing one of the selector knobs and he said the tone defeat switch was not working properly but I gave him $25 US, hit the pots and switches with DeOxit, and soon plan to actually try it out with my regular system. So far it sounds ok through some cheap Yamaha bookshelf speakers I use for testing. If you get it, let me know what you think. Also, if you do a search on the model number it will take you to the HK website and you can download the operator's manual and print it out.

picked it up yesterday. got the price down to 60 bucks because of some minor scratches on the face and top of cabinet.
a friend of mine who has a recording studio was over for beer(s)
so we hooked it up at home to some cheap speakers. everything worked,(except some of the controls will need a good cleaning) so we tried it with a pair of paradigm titans.
after a few more beers we thought it would be a good idea to try out some jbl's.
my neighbours are really impressed with the performance of this amp,but would like me to start my testing a bit earlier in the evening.
seriously, my buddy said it was the best sounding 60 dollar amp he had ever heard. nice and warm almost like a tube amp.
definitely a keeper!

I've never heard of "solid-state glare" before now. What is it--a type of distortion?

It means the highs feel like someone is sticking knitting needles into your brain through your ear drums. Some worse than others. SS clips straight and hard on the highs. If you can still hear them it is annoying. Some are a bit nasty even when not clipping, but some aren't. Got to listen to find out.
Tweeters or even some mid compression drivers with horns can get harsh and if coupled with some not so good SS it can make for some piercing highs. A piccallo over a bad PA system one time had me ready to cover my ears and scream!
