Has your audio hobby significantly reduced your TV viewing time?

This question is probably pointed more at those who haven't been into audio for most or all of their adult lives. For instance, I've only been obsessed with this madness for a few years now, but I can honestly say I watch TV about a quarter as much as I used to....and that's being liberal with my TV viewing time estimate. I'll go two, three, four days without watching TV (I've never been a big TV viewer....one or two hours max/day at my peak) but rarely a day goes by I don't get in at least half an hour, usually a couple of hours, critically listening to my main rig. And when I do watch TV its something music related (documentary or concert) almost half the time. Other times it's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on the DVR, NatGeo or military channel, a little sports, or a movie on Roku with my kids or GF.

And, of course, I spend an exponentially greater amount of time on the computer because of AK....but I'm never on the computer while listening to the main rig.

This stuff really shook my life up.

And I'm totally good with it. :thmbsp:

I removed the TV from my listening area about a year ago....dont miss it one bit. The only time I watch TV now is when Im in bed.

My TV, computer network and AV system are all interconnected. I sometimes web surf on the tv with music playing from my TT or SACD player. Sometimes the tv is just visual wallpaper. The music is never just aural wallpaper.

I watch as little TV as possible, but my wife is obsessed with the evil thing and I must comply. :sigh:

That is until I start feeling like I can't stand any more stupidity or my head is going to explode-- and then I put my foot down. :D

Actually I am a politics junkie so I watch the news on a fairly regular basis, but even then the mind-numbing commercials drive me insane

I hear ya there. My old lady is addicted to (un)reality TV. She sits on the couch letting her brain turn to goo while I sit in the dungeon playing beautiful music .

Yup (I watch less TV as a result of my audio obsession)

I am more targeted in what I watch on TV too.

I tend, also, to be on my computer when I am listening to music. So a I am reading; not always the best of stuff - but slightly better than TV.

My TV viewing has decreased significantly, but more because of the internet than anything.

Even when I "watch TV" I still prefer to do it on my computer, where I can watch each "hour-long" episode in about 42 minutes.

I cut off that sewer line into my home in 1996. The exception was the 5 years I lived abroad where the programming was actually quality, at least the 2 public channels.

Tubeage/BadassBob....thank the good Lord you can find sanctuary in audio from that!

Oh, and I dig the Terry quote, Bob. An older friend of mine back in college lived near him in the late 70's (Hawaii I'm pretty sure). LOTS of interesting stories. DMT came up a lot. And aliens.

Like others of you, I was never a big TV viewer anyway. When it I do watch, it is usually something recorded from PBS on my DVR. I am big into what I call "Real Reality TV", aka documentaries and science and nature shows. You know, shows about real stuff.

But now that I have gotten bitten by this audio bug, I have to say that enjoying this hobby has seriously cut into my TV viewing time, such as it was. I have been going I think at least a week at a time without even turning on the "Boob Tube". I am having way too much fun either listening to newly acquired LP's, CD's, or even cassettes for that matter, or otherwise messing around with my vintage gear or looking for more vintage gear, or reading about vintage gear on the internet, which mostly means trying to keep up with the goings on here on AK. It's been great fun, and I am enjoying myself immensely.

BTW, this also happens to be my 500 post on AK! How fitting it seems to me that I happen to be expressing my joy and excitement for this great hobby.

I think 98% of what comes out of the TV is worse than pure crap.

I think what comes out of the TV has been contributory to the general decline of morality and values in society.

That's all the deterrent i need.

Audio has never drawn me from TV, it's where i escape from TV.

The number of shows on TV fit to watch becoming less and less has significantly reduced my viewing time the most. I told my mom (who pays for it) that it would be fine with me if she had the TV service shut off. I can watch a lot of what I want on the 'net plus my VHS tapes and DVDs. Some days, the **** she watches combined with the dumb ass commercials make me want to put a brick through the screen.

I agree with some other posts. The hobby, yes, and the content of tv took care of most of the rest. I guess the reciprocal question would be: Has the quality of programming on tv freed-up more time for your audio hobby? Why yes it has! :) And the secondary answer is, "I have a house... who needs a hobby?" :(

"I watch as little TV as possible, but my wife is obsessed with the evil thing ......"

"..... even then the mind-numbing commercials drive me insane"

Regretfully, my wife appears to be addicted to garbage programming. American Idol, The Voice, America's Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars. Ugh... I swear I can hear brain cells scream and die when I'm exposed to that crap.

My rule of thumb is that programs that are inherently uninteresting are 'gussied up' by being made into a so called 'competition', and are to be avoided at all costs.

The sheer volume of commercials is truly offensive.

I honestly can't tell you the last time I had to sit through a salvo of commercials. If I watch anything it's off the DVR.

Reality TV....the producers of these shows exploit and cultivate the female's inherent need to observe others. And they do it with programming that offers zero in the way of spiritual or intellectual growth. Like this country needs any more corrosive matter in its pop culture. Bastards.

Haven't had a TV feed in the house for the past 14 years. People seem to always ask me about that absurd commercial they saw last night. I just respond with, "No, why do you ask?" They look at me like I'm crazy and I explain that I feel far more well-adjusted without having something keep me pissed off at the world.

So, between the internet, ham radio and audio, I really don't have time for that dreck....

Cheers,

David

Actually, it's what's on TV that keeps me from watching TV. Almost nothing there.

I agree totally! I personally haven't had cable TV or satellite for my entire adult life (I'm 49), and only watch what I can get free over the air, which in my case is usually something on PBS, if anything at all.

I travel quite a bit on business, and on the occasional time I happen to turn on the TV when in a hotel room, it totally amazes me that you can flip through 100+ channels and still find nothing worthwhile to watch. TV is almost absolute and total "Dreck" in my opinion. And "Reality TV", don't get me started. What an oxymoron! There is absolutely nothing "real" about it!
