Having major trouble setting up my turntable

The ADC bodies are as good as the stylus you put on them...

There are some well priced RZL After Market styli (SuperXLM MkII Shibata) - on ebay for around $50 - a real bargain - I have one and they are good.

For a bit more, Turntableneedles also have the original SuperXLM styli
http://www.turntableneedles.com/Needle-108-DQ_p_848.html
or even the original ZLM stylus (getting pricey!)
http://www.turntableneedles.com/ADC-ZLM-Needle-108-DEQ_p_845.html
and the absolute top of the line ADC Astrion stylus
http://www.turntableneedles.com/113-DRSAbrADC-ASTRION-RSA_p_865.html

You can fit these to either of your two ADC bodies.... for best results you need to be able to adjust the C and R loading though. (as mentioned in period ZLM cartridge reviews! - available in the VE library http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=38748 and http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/v...previous&sid=260d2c49f3b4c38023c3d73451047b5a)

The Pickering XUV is also an excellent cartridge - issue is with finding original or high quality styli - I think originals are now unobtainium - but various places have high quality after market styli (Jico, Turntableneedles, LPGear, etc..)

My take on the cartridge decision:
All the cartridge is, is a set of coils, a generator - the quality of the sound will be determined by the quality of the stylus.

Whichever one you can get the best stylus for - that will be the best one!
BUT - getting the cartridge loading (both C and R) right will turn a good cartridge into an exceptional one.... and vice versa.

bye for now

David

Little late to the overhang setup but, I just made one of these to go onto the headshell and use a Technics overhang guage. This spacer is 3mm cut from an aluminum cable strap kit purchased at Home Depot for $3 or $4. Makes it a bit easier than measuring everytime I want to change a cartridge.

David I guess my meds are getting to me..... C and R ???

I have the tracking weight at 1.2 grams... same with anti-akate set 1.2 on dial. Stylus tip is 49MM from washer in head shell(over hang?) for a Pioneer PL-518 series TT what am I missing???

Thanks
Louis

Sorry Louis,

my fault for using obtuse abreviations - Capacitance and Resistance.

You can use capacitance/resistance adjustment to extend the high end, or fill in the midrange, or raise the high end....

In a late 70's review of ADC's then top cartridge (the ZLM) the reviewer said - if you just plug it into a standard phono stage, you will hear a good cartridge, but if you adjust its loading properly, you will hear an exceptional cartridge .... as is the case with most (MM / MI) cartridges.

I think one of the reasons the audiophile world shifted to MC's is that they are far less sensitive to loading - so what the end user hears is more or less what the designer intended.

With MM / MI (relatively high inductance cartridges) have is a great ability to change their character substantially based on loading - this is the Jekyll and Hyde of vinyl. It can be a huge advantage in that you can tweak and adjust a cartridge to be just so:thmbsp:.

Most people just plug their cartidge in, and never realise what it is capable of!

I am intending to add some pages to my website discussing cartridge loading...

but DaveyW (who inspired my efforts) already has something up along similar lines at http://daveyw.edsstuff.org/vinyl/loading/
Although he covers only resistive loading there....

bye for now

WOW I had no idea this could be done to a cartridge. I was Super happy this monring with how good:music: just plugging the cart in and having it set up
right as I posted. Not sure about doing this:scratch2:
Thanks again for the links I ordered some record cleaning fluid (large spray bottle) as all these LP have not been played in years. They are stored correctly in the "Junk" bedroom :D 400 LP from family collections.
Thanks
Louis

LMAO 61 retired, have cold Bud in hand and wearing a Texas Longhorn T shirt and shorts..it was 106 in Fort Worth Texas today :sigh: I was going to
wash the motorcycle ( ZX-14 Kawasaki Ninja)avator pic and go for a ride......not... too hot. Pop left me his Cornwalls,Revox R2R and this PL-518X TT and hundereds of tapes and LP's. Pop did not like leisure suits either.:D Disco sux. Found my old Deep Purple LP. What do you use to clean the dust of the Lp with?? I have a new carbon fiber twin brush with a handle but I remember Pop had a round green tube that had a bottle of cleaner inside. The bursh is not removing all the dust. One LP was not in the sleeve :thumbsdn:

You need to either get a Spinclean unit or DIY a record cleaning system. You can be as basic or as elaborate as you like.
Me? I'm just going hand turn basic.= old TT for setting the record on I could use the motor, but I feel better hand turning, cleaning solution, a record brush or two, distilled water just in case although probably not needed and a vacuum modified for records.

Thanks to both of you for the cleaning link and manual cleaning advice.
I ordered some cleaning fluid and I have a new carbon fiber double brush
and some anti static towels for wiping off cleaner. I also have some 3M micro fiber detailing towels that are Great for photo lens etc might snag one of them for the LP's :thmbsp: Enjoying old TT again.... 20 years later.
