Heathkit AS101/Model 17? Project help

Hi every one. Thanks for letting me in. I'm trying to save some bruises and would like to find out if I'm on the right track. I've read a lot of post on AK and feel the best knowledge is here for this project but I'm getting confused. I'm knowledgeable to the point of being dangerous. I've recapped a few stereos and worked as an electronic tech on fuel system 15 years. Mostly swapping boards. I'm capable with finish carpentry20241031_102209.jpg20241031_102118.jpg20241031_102134.jpg.20241031_102156.jpg20241031_102142.jpg

I've recently acquired an in progress project. Unfortunately the gentleman passed away before he could complete it. May he rest in peace.

I'm not afraid of diving into this but, I'm not sure what to do with the cabinets and crossovers. The front and rear baffles are solid wood and the cutouts look like he used a chain saw and need replaced. I'm thinking 3/4" HDF particle board front and rear.

Components:
Woofers are Heathkit 401 149
Drivers Heathkit 401 150
Horns H 811B
Crossover Is Heasthkit AS101
Cabinets are huge, solid walnut? 24Wx36Hx18.5D Model17???(A guess)

My understanding:
Woofers are Altec 416-8A Very Good
Drivers are Altec 806-8A Very good
Crossover is proprietary ok but could be better.
Cabinets should produce some nice sound if done correctly.

My questions are primarily on the cabinets and crossovers.
Do the cabinets need to be tuned?
Is 25Hz correct for the woofer?
What kind of vent is required?
I've read the crossovers are based on the speaker components and not the cabinets. Is this true?
I've also read that there is an improved model 19 crossover plan somewhere that would be ideal. Is this true

Thank You for any help.

With the exception of the Xover, they are very much the same as the Altec Valencia. 846A.
The port would be the area around the horn.

The 846B used twin 4” port ducts in the front baffle.

So go look those up for some ideas.

Model 17 were duplexes

Thank you Gordon.
I appreciate the link and intend to pursue the Z19. I may have missed it but I didn't see a final version. Was the proto type the only version?
I went ahead and finished recapping the crossovers that came with speakers. Apologies, I forgot to take a picture before I assembled them. I will have them apart again while I'm trying to tune the cabinets. I followed the schematic that he had in the box (attached). I believe it's a N800a? I had to find out how they sounded and all the parts were there. They produce a lot of sound. A lot more than my 3's, 7's, 9's, or 15's with half the power. I think they sound good but still not great. I'm still working on the enclosures trying get them tuned in. Right now they are empty cabinets.
Thank You

Thanks Ron, I was referring to size and identity of the enclosure. The size seems to be similar to be very similar to the 17's. I went ahead and assembled and believe I was able to figure out his intention with the recessed horns. I mounted them on the inside 1-1/2" back from the front baffle (picture attached). I ended up with right at 22.5 cubic inches of total vent. Does that sound about right? I can hear the sound of the enclosure now. I have no material inside the box yet. I do have some coming. I intend to cover the back, top, and bottom with with 1" sonic barrier. Thanks again

Ah, I thought you had the orig cabs.
I have 846B Valencia’s. So my knowledge only relates to that port arrangement. Not sure if the A was tuned diff from the B. Or where the Heaths were tuned.
If you like, I can throw the DATS on mine and show you the results. It just takes a few minutes.

That would be awesome. Good information to have. I don't have DATS but I think i will have to have it to get thing right.

Following this general theme, can anyone guess? Traded Altec Model 17 for these today!

I don’t want to thread hijack. I can start a new one. I’ll need some crossover help as well.

Oops! My first layout of the crossover I noticed a problem. When I ordered the super coils I got my part number screwed up and ordered a 2.5mH instead of a 2.7mH inductor. I really don't want to toss them and reorder new ones unless I have to. My question is will this be a large difference? Will I damage anything if I use them?

Legatos should have 803's or 416's.

That cabinet is like 41 or 42 inches wide.
Mine have 803a (Heathkit branded) in one and 803b in the other. Not sure how those would sound together. I see a local listing for a pair of 416a. Perhaps I should get those to match the 803b a little better?
