Help identifying these Bose speakers

Hi,

I think these are called Acoustimass, but not sure. They say absolutely nothing on them, that I can find. I also have some single-cubes, and some white ones that look identical to the black ones. They were given to me, and I was just trying to identify them. Thanks a lot!

???

Also, I wasn't sure if I should have posted this here, or in Home Theater. Please feel free to move it, if necessary. I just figured these little speakers were pretty commonly known, so I picked the Speakers Forum. Thanks again.

AM-5 satellites?

I agree. They need to be used with the Acoustimass bass module if you want any response below about 200 Hz.

I've heard of people using them with other subs but don't know any of the specifics and if it's worth the effort.

Thanks for the responses. I guess "AM" stands for Acoustimass? Can you tell they are "-5" by the way they are shaped? I'm curious if this is a design that has stayed the same for a long time, or if they have changed over the years. Any ideas on how old these are?

Many thanks.

probably 90's, I remember a friend of mine that had a set like that with the red stripe, did you only get two of those?

Eh, funny, I actually have 3. Then there are 2 more that are just single cubes. And, I have a white set of the ones I pictured above (same shape, but no red stripe, and a flat white finish). I'm assuming they're all the same age.

The white ones have light scuffs on them (I guess the white finish is a magnet for that). They look fine, but I wish I knew of a way to clean them up a little.

Sounds like the same outfit my brother-in-law had for his home theater. The left-center-right front speaks were of the dual cube design and the left-right rear speaks were the single cube design with the acoustimass sub. I also believe the AM-5 designation reflected the application i.e. a 5:1 surround with sub, AM-7 was a 7:1 surround (please correct me if I'm wrong here). All of the speakers connected to the sub unit. While over at his place one day I grabbed the left and right cubes and twisted the cubes about 30 degrees from each other, just like the above pic of the white ones, and he couldn't believe the difference it made in the soundfield; (direct reflecting) was Bose's claim to fame. And yes you will need a sub to get ANY bottom end sound.

Yup... the cubes are point-source mid/high radiators only. Knowing Bose, they are probably designed to work optimally with particular Bose subs. A person could try them with any sub I suppose... especially self-amplified ones with adjustable upper-end cut-offs and see what kind of results they could get.

The strong point with these is that they're near-invisible, thus wife-friendly. In theory, the sound stage and imaging characteristics should be pretty good due to minimal edge diffraction and all that jazz, plus aim-ability.

I had a Bose Lifestyle 12 system,I think was the number, and all the satellites looked like the black ones with the red stripes. It wont be too pretty, but you could use the black ones in front, the white ones in the back, and the single cube in the center.Just get the Accoustimass sub,and you will be in business. If you can buy 4 of the stands, its amazing how much you can change the sound by moving them up or down.

Red lines are considered the "best" of the accoustimass speaker series. Made in Ireland, versus Mexico for the newer ones.
