Help! Mcintosh 6700 DAC no longer works (or appears to not work)

Apologies if this has been covered before, tried an extensive search and couldn't find any answers. I recently moved and had my Mcintosh 6700 boxed up for a brief period of time. When I attempted to hook up my imac back to the amp it no longer is listed as a source on the computer.

Therefore, I can't get any sound from the computer to amp. I've now tried multiple computers and none recognize the amp. I've tried two different USB cords and 2 toslink cables. Still nothing. Everything else on the amp is functioning fine, and the computer doesn't seem to be the issue based on multiple tests. Very confused by it all. any help is very appreciated - thinking it could be a firmware issue on the amp but don't know when any of that would have changed. The DAC has functioned perfectly on the amp for over a year.

You might have to do a factory reset.....Instructions should be in the user manual.....

unfortunately i've tried a reset and no luck.....

I would think the next step would be to reload the firmware and USB audio software onto the unit....
I had some good support from Audio classics with a firmware update on my C48...
Theres an up-lolder program for both firmware and USB which has to come from McIntosh themselves.....

I'd contact Audio Classics and see if they can help you, I am sure they will....

did not mess with the pass thru. yeah instead of showing up as mcintosh 6700 in the audio device source settings on the imac it just says 'digital out'. I think it is in the firmware. I never bothered checking the USB D/A firmware before but now it says version 0.00. Does anyone have a 6700 they could check their USB D/A firmware for comparison? The first screen on the setup menu states MA6700 V1.32.

I would do the Reset back to factory defaults holding the standby button in. When it's done unplug the unit from AC for 5 minutes.

Plug it back in>power up >have the computer on then plug the USB in.

Set the 6700 to the USB source > go to system preference>sounds>Output tab > Is McIntosh there?

WOW

All 000 on firmware, it must have been wiped or something.

Yeah could have had a glitch and dropped its firmware or part of it, or corrupted it.....

LOL.....I was thinking the same thing....:D

Yep, I reckon re-burn the firmware is the next step....

tried the hard reset to factory settings and then plugging the unit back in... nothing, still the same. It has to be in the USB D/A firmware. is that something that can be fixed outside of a shop or am i going to have to summon the professionals... $$$$$$$

I think you can bring it into a local Mac dealer that has some service capabilities and they can restore it and it might be free.

Yes it is, if you go back to one of my earlier posts, I mention that audio classics put me in touch with the right people at McIntosh, it was Chuck Hinton, he sent me the uploader programs and the new firmware and USB audio files....
I got the instructions and warnings.....
Its pretty rudimentary stuff if you are computer savvy....

But, if you screw it up, you can have a very expensive paperweight.....so if you aren't confident with doing that sort of thing, get to a dealer, they can probably burn the firmware while you wait....

I have a 6700 and I've found Chuck Hinton very responsive to my questions. I have had an issue with my dac, which won't accept my coaxial out from my cable box. I tried everything I could think of (including contacting Chuck and Audio Classics, from whom I purchased it) and it never would accept the signal. I finally hooked it up via analog. The coax input works fine from my Oppo 93. I've had some glitches on the usb input as well at times, and find I have to cycle the receiver off and on and then it works fine. Hope you get your issue resolved.

So i have the software now but it specifies PC... anyone think it is worth attempting with a mac running windows software via Parallels....
