Help Me Improve My Speaker Placement!

The Reverend

Just terrible.
Hello all,

I am thinking about rearranging my bedroom a bit. Since I live in an apartment it is my multiuse room with a desk, bookshelf and double bed as well as my stereo rig. I am fairly happy with my speakers. I feel like the imaging is OK but not perfect, and since I am not going to coax more authoritative bass out of them I figure I can work on the imaging. I have included a picture of the floor plan of my room; have at it. My room is the bottom left one. Thanks!

Can't answer this without knowing what speakers we're talking about :)

Whether or not they have passive radiators, rear/front firing ports, all makes a difference.

I'm going to assume that he means the Wharfedale Diamond 9.2s. If it were my room, I would probably position them against the long wall on the right side and toe them in slightly, but the problem is where to put the rest of the stuff. Seems like a lot of stuff for a room that small.

They are the Wharfedale's. I currently have them on opposite ends of my closet facing my bed, which is centered between my closet. the short end of my bed is along the wall you mentioned with about 2' of space near the window. I don't know if that makes any sense at all; if I had a camera I would take a photo.

loose the bed, put the speakers in each corner facing the center of the room, put everything else in between, and then you can sleep in the closet on the right wall. looks big enough.:D

Sounds like the right idea. I can even lose the desk, I don't really need to study too much. Besides, maybe that will force me to study in the library.

On a serious note, I was wondering why it is necessary to toe in my speakers? Is it totally out of the question to have them facing frontward with no toe in? I had the toed in until today and I decided to experiment with dead ahead and different configurations.

Desk in front of the window. Speakers in the corners on either side of it, toed in 30°. Head of the bed outside the bath door. Nightstand in that corner. Bookshelf on the long wall beside the bed. Gear on cart or in rack next to desk.

Dinner's at 6, and it's your turn to cook.

Feng Shui RULEZ!!....

I really like the idea Zilch. I think this sounds like a great idea because it frees up a lot of space in the center of the room as well. I am curious on one thing- why the head of the bed near the bathroom instead of at the wall?

So you can breathe in all the heady aromas of the bathroom while you sleep? I'd consider putting the head at the wall end, too!

Either at the desk, or in bed, you're in the sweet spot of the speakers, the plane of equidistance. You want improved imaging, that's how.

Corner placement of the speakers provides the maximum boundary reinforcement to enhance the bass. Toed-in gives you full on-axis response, with minimal phase interference from the drivers themselves or reflections.

Do the layout using the interactive thingy they provide:

It's a residence suite. The bath is private. Presumably, it also has a door.... :p:

Zilch, I wanted to let you know that I just finished moving my furniture around a few minutes ago. I took your advice except I just put my bedside table in the closet (the only thing I used to use that for was my stereo gear anyway). I bought a stand from Target (the store) for my gear and I am going to test everything tomorrow after I finish cleaning up all my crap!

Best,
Colin

Cool.

I'm betting you'll be reconsidering whether you actually need a sub or not....

I am always reconsidering whether I need a sub or not... and a new turntable, and a few new CD's, and some new speakers, and a universal SACD player, and a tube preamp, and the list goes on and on!

So toeing-in is generally a good thing to do? Are there any rules of thumb to apply when determining the degree of toe-in? As you might recall from some of my earlier posts, I have HPM-100's which are pretty big - I might even describe them as brutish when compared to some of the dainty towers that I see in the showrooms today.

Thanks for any info that you can provide.

Here's the way I set my speakers..

I sit down right where I will be doing most of my listening and make a mental note of it.... then I point each speaker directly at that spot.. then I sit back down and listen.. then I will try moving them out a little, then in a little, then I take the best sounding of those combinations and set the speakers to stay that way.

Get out of the closet!

I'd move the headboard near the bathroom wall. The speakers on each side of the window. On stands.

The desk can go by the window and the bookshelf to the left wall.

This way you'll get good stereo sound either at your desk or in the bed. The speakers should be angled towards the bed, try a few different angles. I've looked at your plan for awhile, and the only other possibility would be to hang your speakers from the upper corners (tweeter down). This would free up a bit of floor space, too.

Let us know what you've decided!

Rick

Zilch beat me to it....

I don't know much about all the electronics, but I'm pretty good at placing speakers. Keep adjusting the toe-in until you get it right.

Zilch, as usual, had it on the nose.

Zilch: What about hanging speakers from the wall? Hard to toe in, though.
