Help with setting up Dual 714Q

So, a while ago I posted asking for help to buy some necessary upgrades for my TT and now I've gotten everything and I've been home for 2 months but I'm using my worn out Ortofon OMB5 because I'm so lazy of learning how to do everything again... but the sibilance is driving me crazy, so it's time I install my new Super OM 40. :D

I've been into this hobby for a long time, but I was "away" from it for a very long time and now I have forgotten everything.

It doesn't help that I have a Dual 714Q, which is pretty hard to set up or just complicated looking :P

Anyway, once I remove the old cart (I already did and replaced it with a Pickering XV-15, my guinea pig) I have to:

1) Zero everything and balance the arm (must I do this EVERY single time I change cartridges? I have two 1/2 adapters, it would be nice to be able to just switch them). Can I use the OMB5 stylus on the Super OM 4 cart while doing this and then just replace it afterwards?

2) Set the tracking force and anti-skating.

3) Align the cartridge. (It's pretty damn tricky with the 1/2 inch adapter or am I doing anything wrong?). Which are the best free protractors now? I got a Schön protractor but it seems kinda tricky.

Is that all? Am I forgetting anything?

Also, I'm having some problems with grounding. There's FM reception in my phono pre-amp. What should I do?

Thanks in advance :thmbsp:

714Q is a nice table. Originally outfitted with the Ortofon cart in the ULM arm. Sounds like yours had the factory approved changeover that allowed for standard 1/2" mount cartridges. Part of the changeov er included an added weight on the back of the counterbalance - black - about the size of a quarter. Multiple headshells are nice - set them up once with the Dual protractor and your set. Yup - no shortcuts - change the cart, and zero out the tracking force and re-balance. No big deal.

Dual protractor? Where can I get one? Mine doesn't seem to have one of those anymore :(

And yeah, I also have 2 extra weights hehe

It doesn't list the 714Q, sure it's the same one? :)

Also... I've tried to align the XV-15 with the Schön protractor I have and even if the cartridge is all the way to the front, point B will still be too high. Sigh.

I'm definitely getting this gauge to make things easier.

Also, where can I get one more adapter? Turns out the second one I have is different. :(

Thanks again!

Turntablennedles still offers these. Svalander.se, too. And I guess asking All-In-One Electronics couldn't harm - also about the gauge.

"It doesn't list the 714Q, sure it's the same one?"

yup - or I wouldn't have called your attention to it.

If you still have the accessory box that had your additional weight and 1/2" headshell take another look inside for your alignment gauge. It should be clear plastic that looks like what might be packing. But it's not, it's the gauge! We did the conversion on Goat67's 731Q and couldn't find his either until he re-examined all of the contents. Dual was very ingenious even to the point of saving space.

Nope, it's definitely not there. It came with EVERYTHING but that. It was brand new too, don't know where the gauge went :X

So it's really precise and all I will need to set up any cart on this TT, right? Sounds pretty good.

I'm getting that one off of eBay. ;)

If that's the gauge that sold today and you were the buyer that's the one. As for the alignment, along with the gauge, a good eye, good light and steady hand. Good Luck

Dammit, someone beat me to it. :(

Can't seem to find another one... hopefully I'm not doomed to haunt eBay forever looking for another one.

Gotta believe me next time. Right part, and would ship to you, all at a fair price. Again, no affiliation.

1) Zero everything and balance the arm (must I do this EVERY single time I change cartridges? I have two 1/2 adapters, it would be nice to be able to just switch them).

Here's trick from The Wayback Machine:

You need to have access to a fairly accurate scale.

Measure both cartridges, in their mounting adapter, but without any guards that you normally remove to play records. Note any difference in weight.

If the difference is less than 1/10th of a gram, you are done, congratulations!

If it's more, find a suitable weight that you can add to the lighter of the two cartridge assemblies and add enough to make them weigh the same. You're done.

If they weigh the same, no, you don't need to re-balance and so on.

I used to use roll solder as a weight, just wrapped around something out of the way of the record. You may have something better.

Hmmm... the Ortofon does come with an extra weight, that would make it similar in weight to the Pickering. But isn't the Ortofon better on the Dual's ULM arm without the weight?

Also, here are the adapters:

What is the part I need called?

Thanks! :)

That TK26 is the carrier plate for ULM carts. Whereas the other one you have for standard halfinch mount looks like the usual TK24, but in silver-grey instead of plain black...

Ok, ordered the right parts. Thanks a lot for the help!

Also...

I've tried to get the cart as aligned as I could with the Schön I have and the EnjoytheMusic protractors. Now... I'm still using the OM5 stylus on the Super OM body. It is a spherical stylus... even if it is terribly misaligned that means no harm to the records, right?

If I put in the OM 40 and it's not PERFECTLY aligned = bye bye stylus and records?

And I can adjust everything with the OM5 on the cart and then replace it with the OM 40?

Thanks once again :thmbsp:

Also, is adding the supplied extra weight to the Ortofon cart and the extra weight to the counterweight a bad idea? When using the Ortofon at 2.5g (without weight), the arm becomes really long in order to balance it. When it reaches the center, instead of returning it keeps on hitting the dust cover and stays in the same place forever.
