Holy Rip VanWinkle Batman! CDP $$$

Man it has been a while. When I last bought a CDP I got my 110 CD changer on closeout for $70 but retail was just over $100.

When looking at Bluetooth transcievers for my lubbable project I thought it might be nice to include a simple single play CDP as well. After all they must be commodities by now. Near as I can tell $200+ is the ante.

Ouch. I have been asleep far too long.

Plenty of threads here on new CDPs, the Onkyo 7030 retails for around $140 and seems to be a fan favorite. One of the new Teac players has quite a few fans around here in the same price range.

What RT Fan said, all the way. Also, go to Bartertown and you will see plenty of wonderful cdp's on the cheap.

Just a bit of sticker shock. I suspect by the time I build a power supply and a control system I will have spent as much on a PC drive as a regular CDP. it used to be that there we inexpensive DVD players that would play CDs but you still have the control problem as they are not intended for that use. It is probably a "just bite the bullet and drop a couple C-notes on a rack mountable CDP" situation. Will look at those $150 options too.

Go to Goodwills and other thrift shops, you'll find a good one soon enough. I have several nice CDPs from Goodwill, usually around $10.

Plenty of great players that listed for $1000 or more now selling for $80, I have several outstanding units.

Here's one example.

Have not bought a "stand alone" Redbook CD player in a while. My last disc spinner purchase was a Yamaha AVENTAGE BD-A1060BL Blu-ray (universal) Disc Player back in 2017 for $399 w/ free S&H from One Call.

The price didn't strike me as too high :dunno: .. my 1st CD spinner was a Pioneer cartridge type unit back in 1984 for around $400 .. if memory serves me well. That's about $988 in todays inflation adjusted dollars.

Bottom line: my most recent purchase has multiple times the capability (Blu Ray, DVD, SACD, CD) of my original disc spinner and cost about 60% less (in inflation adjusted terms).

I continue to use my Thinkpad's disk drive for everything, listening, watching and recording. The drives are removable, if I want to put in a second hard drive. My Thinkpads control three of the four systems in the house. The bathroom system is a mini class d amp fed from a small mp3 player. It is nice to shower with some music blasting.
