How about a modern sonic match for klipsch lascalas

They currently reside in the basement with my 'system" and I like their sound. I am moving some of my stuff upstairs but looking for a more asthetically acceptable speaker that would have a lot of the characteristics of the lascalas. I will be using en eico hf 81 as the driver and the room is 17'X19' and my wife doesn't care for the looks of the lascalas (I should add they are beat up, ugly, but sound good), but she does like their sound. Any suggestions? Thanks Norm

Would she like the look better if cabs refinished? AFAIK, you can still special order La Scalas, which would obviously be the closest modern match, but the cost...? Lot cheaper to refinish cabs. Of course, it would be heresy to suggest that the Heresy provides 90% of their sound.

Post a picture of them.. if you put some elbow grease into 'em I bet they'd come out looking presentable.

Belles have not been available new since 2005. They show up used from time to time but tend to be very spendy.

If you've got the corners for them go on the hunt for a pair of Klipschorns. Though they'll likely to cost more than a pair of Belles would.

If you're handy with wood you can build a very nice pair of Cornscalas for less than you'd pay for a pair of used Belles.

I sold my La Scalas and used the procedes to build a pair of Cornscalas. Here's the project:

While I never did get to listen to them "side by side" I have to say that the Cornscalas are everthing that's good about La Scalas with the ability to produce bass that the La Scalas just couldn't.

Don't rule out a nice pair of Cornwalls too.

Good luck!

I am somewhat of a luddite when it comes to cameras and posting pics, so no pics. But it isn't solely that they are butt ugly because of a bad finish with lots of ink stains etc., it's that they are "too big" for the room according to my wife, and no, I definitely am keeping her. So, any slightly less physically impressive sized speakers that might do the trick? I did look at Greg Volti's site with his lascalas and they are stunning. However what I find beautiful in hi fi and what she likes are just two different things. Norm

While you might well find a tonal balance match up you are going to face much the same physical issues with anything that has similar efficiency levels. Why not ho a two way version of what you have? lose the K400 and the K77 and go large format with a single K510? They will integrate in much less distance than a three way and will look better or at least a little bit smaller overall. just a thought. Best regards Moray James.

Hmm.

Personally, if I was in the same situation, I'd just tell her straight up "Sorry, but I really love these speakers. Unless you want me to go and spend a bunch of money on some new ones, these ones are going into that room. The fact they're too big is not a big deal (pun intended), you won't even notice them after a while."

She should be willing to compromise at least a bit. Unless you like the idea of getting new speakers. I find it a little odd when guys on here say that their wives have forbid them from putting their possessions somewhere they don't want them. I don't think so, there's always room for negotiation and compromise.

Relationships are about compromise and devotion. We have been together for 43 yrs so finding an accomodation in this case is no big deal. I was looking for suggestions of speakers with a smaller foot print but with many of the mid range attributes of the la scala. Here no one forbids anyone else about stuff. It's always a two way street. Norm

Well that's good to hear :thmbsp:

My only suggestion would be a smaller set of Klipsch. Maybe the Heresy's would be up your alley.

I have used Herseys before mated to LaScalas as center and surrounds and they do match pretty well.
I am betting they are a better match than almost anything else that is off the shelf but they need more power to get them going to compare to the LS.

Good Luck

These look great. But you must have corners:

Some info here.

They're available assembled or in kit form.

My post regarding the aesthetics.

I think that you are overlooking the tremendous impact of system efficiency. You could have two speakers which measure identically response wise but which are different in efficiency and whey you play them for people (even at the same level) people will prefer the more efficient version. High efficiency means large there is no way around that.
La Scala's don't make much bass below 50 Hz they are pretty solid down to about 80 Hz. the thing which people love about them is their dynamic capability and that they can peel paint. Drop the efficiency down to an honest 95 db and you have a pair of Heresy. Smaller foot print H3 great sounding speaker best Heresy yet. Best regards Moray James.

That was awesome.

I have nothing to offer here except a good home for your La Scalas, if you're near New York.

And some agreement about the compromise thing.
