how many records do you have?

I guess I've been lucky avoiding duplicates, I don't think I have any. I guess being an artist with a good visual memory helps that, I never remember album titles but never forget the covers.

My problem is I sometime think I own the album but what I remember was looking over the album in the record store.

Yes, but you remember the songs right  ... we'll yea but did I hear the vinyl album or stream it online.

Happened to me recently with No Reason to Cry by Eric Clapton. Thought I owned it but had to add it to my want list ... I just streamed it.

I'm a lot more selective about the quality of what I buy these days. I only buy a duplicate if it's considerably better than the one or ones that I have now. When I first started collecting vinyl it was more about the title than the quality of the disc.

Around 2000 maybe 2300, though I have this plan to get rid of several hundred. Yeah, that's what I keep telling her.

Now there is a problem I sometimes have. I've seen a record so many times in the store I think I own it. That has happened to me a couple of times.

I guess I am in the between 1000 and 1500. I know it's 12 cubes in my storage and it's full and in need of a good thinning.

I keep a list in Collectorz but don't keep it updated very well.

I started out by putting mine in an excel spreadsheet. Then I converted that to an MS Access database.

Then I stumbled upon discogs. And for records that are already in their database.... It's really a useful tool for cataloging your collection. I guess I started adding mine about 7 months ago, and I add them now as I buy them. I like seeing how many other people (who use discogs) have the particular record that I have. The database is very detailed all the way down to the matrix runout etchings.

Good luck with collecting and cataloging

edit: 2276 current count on discogs

Do you have a link or something, or how to get started on it. What do you do find your record and then mark it as have? Do you get your own personal list?

Thanks.

hahahaha I guess I was wrong with my last post, guys do know exact numbers!

It's called OCD. ;) I can't imagine actually keeping track of my LPs in a spreadsheet, I'd go nuts after five or six.

I probably have 800 or so, rough estimate based on how many fit on an Expedit shelf.

I have 18 lineal feet of space, with about 70 records per foot. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,300 total. I try to hold it to that.

Actually the link is in my signature

So I perused your discogs collection (I have no complaints with that, Portnoy). It clarified something for me: we can include CDs (why not?).

I'm in the neighborhood of about 1200. Including vinyl LPs, CDs, SACDs, and DVD-A disks.

I've got about 550 records right now, 478 of which are in Discogs. The others don't have Discogs entries yet, and I add a few of those when I have time. Many of the unlisted ones are classical pressings that I pick up for $1 or less in great shape. They're often variants of other items that are in Discogs, so that saves time in entry.

Also, a small number of my Discogs listings are R2R tapes, cassettes, and a couple CDs. I have not yet entered my CD collection but intend to do that at some point. And I have some more factory R2R tapes that don't yet have Discogs listings.

My tastes are mostly rock, blues, classical, jazz: http://www.discogs.com/user/cnolanh/collection

I just find it interesting when people say things like " I have 5000 records" first of all , no one ever has 4,834 records, they always seemed to be counted by 1000's. I'm just curious if people really sit and count 5000 records or just look at the wall and guess. Is there a number of records per shelf inch formula somewhere?

would you count a box set as 1 record or count the individual records in the box set?

and please understand that this is in no way a judgement of guys who keep meticulous track of their collections, if anything I admire the effort.

I haven't counted but know I'm in the 1700-2000 class:thmbsp: Guessing from the amount of 100 packs of cover sleaves I have bought.

I buy dups and triplets of good titels just because it might be better. You just can't see the difernce untill they are side by side. So lets add another 500+ in boxes:D

Box sets are one titel so one record.

I think I might be conservative here:scratch2:

I meen really 8 four hole expedits but need 4 more, wicker baskets, cardbord boxes stored, stacks against the walls. Everywhere I look records, I even dubble buy new records one to play and one stays sealed.

Ok ok I have issues, thanks a lot jeremyjustic

Ok I see so you sign up as a member.
Then you can create a list when you find your record on a page you can "Add To Collection"
This takes some time finding the correct one but once you do you have the link in your list.
This list would be awesome while shopping in an RS. Because you can see the Matrix you have and link to the title fast. This will help in avoiding Dup purchases of not so spacial albums.

Thanks

Last count was 850' s so I figure I am very close to 1,000 now.

I am going to start entering them in discogs so I remember what I have and which ones need upgrading.

I have them organized alphabetically by artist and split into these genres: pop/rock/blues, jazz, jazz-vocal, classical, R&B, and Christmas.

I also have about 400 CDs but I just can't get them to sound good, even with the SAS stylus and the fluid damping kit I cannot get them to track.

Almost enough (me).
Waaaay too many (wife).
Probably more than 2000 and less than 3000. I like that counting by thousands idea. Makes it seem almost reasonable.
