How ot change fuses on ESS AMT1A bookshelf?

crazy-in-az

Uhhhh....
I've noticed that the "circuit breaker" on the back of one of my ESS speakers is popped out, and it can't be pushed back in. The other button on the other speaker is pushed in. The tweeters on both cut out from time to time, but I remedy that by jiggling the button on the circuit breaker until the tweeters come back on.

They usually cut out when I turn the volume up, so I'm guessing the fuses are shot. I'm not sure how to remove the fuses from these. Do I have to remove the woofer and get to from the inside? And should the buttons be in or out if the fuse is blown?

Thanks a lot!

They usually pop out when tripped and once they have cooled down, operation can be restored by pushing them back in.

I would suggest however, that frequent operation resulting in tripping as you have described, may have caused the bi-metallic breaker inside to have fatigued.

I would be
a) removing and replacing the breakers and
b) consider a speaker more suitable to the levels you are requiring from them.

What's funny is that I haven't played these as loud as my other speakers (B&O S-75 and Advent 4002). It may be the receiver I'm using, a Sony STR-D865. The seller wanted to sell the receiver and CD player with the speakers. I'm sure that these speakers deserve a higher quality amplifier.

Okay, so I've replaced the Pioneer woofers that were in the cabs with rebuilt ESS woofers from the correct time period (thanks GordonW). I've hooked them up to my Realistic STA-960 and Technics SU-G90, and they sounded good on both, but best on the Technics.

Anyway, about the fuses. Does anyone know what the voltage and amperage rating are on these fuses? And is there a fuse inside the circuit breaker that needs to be replaced, or do I need to buy an entirely new assembly?

On my ESS AMT4 the fuses are 250 volt 2.5 amp fast blow. My ESS AMT1b pyramids have no fuses...

unplug it and leave for 20 minutes ..if breaker wont stay in its faulty and needs replacing ..if it stays in there are other problems

as long as the fuse is of a correct rating i cant see why not ... it will depend also on how its wired internally in the speaker .

I'll have to take a closer look at the insides. I've got 1.6 amp 250v fuses, I just don't have the holders. Since wattage is calculated by amps x volts, that should give me 400 watts, correct? Should I use these, or should I shoot for lower power?

Okay, 250v then. I think I can get some Bussmann holders and fuses for a few bucks from allied electronics. Thanks for the help!

Well, my fuses and holders arrived today. One of the holder's baggies was resealed with packing tape and is broken. I think the guy sold me a used item that was clearly marked as new on epay. The other holder and fuses are fine.

Anyway, I can't find any polarity markings on the old circuit breaker or the new holders. As long as I wire it the same way (negative input to one terminal, inductor and tweeter potentiometer to the other) does it matter?

I finished one speaker today (still needs a recap, though). Man these are nice! I was saying in another post about how detailed and immediate AMT's are. I can't believe the things I am hearing for the first time on some of my favorite songs!
