How To ID the Base, Emitter, Collector on PNP Transistor?

Vinylcafe

Linvin' the Dream
I have a 2SA836 with no markings on the leads.
I learned that the TO-92 package does not have a standard pin configuration.
I have a Fluke meter with a transistor test function.
Is there an easy and reliable way to determine which leg of this transistor is which?

Jedec (Japanese) transistors DO have standard pinouts.
TO-92 are E-C-B across the flat face.

Thanks for setting me straight. I thought I read somewhere that they did not. I also had one with no markings on it but an "E" on the right leg. I mistakenly took that to mean emitter, when it must be part of the designation.
Unless these are some junk Chinese knock-offs?

I've never seen this. Nearly all japanese transistors do have the collector in the center, making it easy to identify base. JEDEC is the American (started by EIA). The Japanese standards are JIS. It probably is correct, but I don't believe it is a JIS standard. My advise is to use your meter (diode test)
- with the collector in the center, a PNP will conduct with the positive lead on the collector and the negative on the base.

Thanks for this. You prevented me from blowing a new one up. Installed backwards, now corrected.
