HPM 900, 100, JBL L5 question, comment

As a devoted HPM 100 fan, I recently acquired a pair of JBL L5s and am surprised at close they sound to the HPM 100s...they don't have quite the depth on bass or sparkle on the highs...but to me the sound is very close...
especially from reel to reel...

Just curious what the opinion of the group might be relative to the L5s...they seem to be very well built.

Final thought: I found a pair of hpm 900s in atlanta...cheap...woofers are cracked...everything else seems sound...given the difficulty of finding replacements/repairs for the 900s, what would you guys expect the result would be if I dropped in the woofers from my HPM 100s?

better, worse about the same?

Check with our resident speaker repair guru GordonW. He's in your neck of the woods and although he can't replace the cracked woofers with factory original cones, he can recone them with a close substitute (as long as the voicecoils are OK). Most people can't tell the difference but snobby collectors may turn their noses up at the non-original cones.

The HPM-900 woofers were significantly beefier than the hundreds. The 900s have cast metal baskets while the 100s are stamped. I need to post a picture of my 900 woofs alongside an orphan JBL D123 I recently found - a defintite family resemblance IMO.

Wow. Then someone MUST have broken into my place and stole the original stamped metal baskets on my HPM-100s woofers, and replaced them with CAST METAL BASKETS! Oh, the humanity! Is nothing sacred??? :D

The cast-aluminum baskets on the HPM drivers look like they could be machined out of billet.
I have a pair of HPM-900 and a pair of L100--I love both, though the HPM-900 seems more accurate and with less midbass hump, a hump I don't hear.
 
How cracked are to cones in the 900's, I have a pair that were mildly cracked and when I did the refoam I joined them back together with super glue, No not factory or perfect. I have driven these loud and hard since then and I have had no ill effects. Might be worth a try.
 
What exactly are the cones made of? If they are real bad maybe a two part epoxy resin would do the trick. Maybe V it out with a dremel a little on the back side and fill with an epoxy and try not to add mass, just fill the V. I would be temped to try this. Really, what have you got to loose. :scratch2:

Somehow my sleep deprived brain mixed up the HPM-100 woofer with the one in my later gen HPMs (forgot the number at the moment) but the woofer is not even close to the build quality of the others. It has the brittle cone material of the HPM-900 and a stamped basket.

Time to take a nap... :boring:
 
One cone is cracked...the other needs to have the surround replaced...my understanding is that the correct surround is difficult to find and that the cone is all but
impossible...that's why I thought I might simply substitute the woofers from my HPM 100s...

Curious though- no comments on the JBL L5s...maybe they were'n in production long enough to have a following?

Pioneer HPM 900 replacement woofers available

Hello All. I joined this forum a couple of weeks ago to find information about rebuilding Pioneer HPM 900 woofers. I have one pair with a split cone and both needing refoaming. I just bought another pair very inexpensively, supposedly with replaced woofers in both 5 or 6 years ago. I picked them up on Sunday, and they had been replaced. I just called the Pioneer parts line @ 18002287221 (found out this from the guy I bought this pair from) and they have replacement woofers for $208.90. Part number 30-758T. You can order online at pioneerelectronics.com.

With all the looking around on the internet for answers, I did not find this direct site or phone number. So here it is for the record.
