I joined this forum over a year ago as I wanted to get back to listening to music. Not turning my back on HT, however provide myself with a vehicle to experience music much like I had in my younger days...sans parties, drinking, etc ;), and I found this place, infested with people with similar interests, a plethora of experience and probably some of the best advice I have received in a long time.

Anyway, I bought some pioneer gear, advents, ARs, yamaha, bought a TT, vinyl, etc to find a place that I could just sit and enjoy music....but I really hadn't been satisfied.

A couple of months ago I answered a CL add for speakers (my maggies), I didn't have the cash at the time, but decided to start selling some gear so that I could purchase these if they were still available. I contacted the seller roughly 4 weeks after the original ad and he still had them. We communicated back and forth and eventually we were able to meet up so that I could audition the speakers. Well I "inherited" them from this gentleman and we have stayed in contact since. This really is where it all started.

I was on the hunt for a simple system that would provide me with what I consider an experience, where I could sit down, and just listen. I read many posts on Yamaha, pioneer, carver, bryston, adcom, emotiva, etc. I was looking for an amp. I had a preamp that was ok, so I thought I would start with smooth power to open the maggies up. Found one. Seemed like the thirst was growing instead of being satiated (you ALL know what I mean). Get the amp home, plug in, wonderful sound, but.....something was missing. Read more and more and more and more. Asked questions, liked the answers but kept reading....then I tripped over a post about tube preamps and SS amps as being a good match and a good way to ease into tubes...geez I thought will this ever end (actually so did my wife who just roles her eyes now) !?!

Then it happened....I fell on a post about the Yaqin tube product. (remember now you gear junkies, I am on a budget here). It's my birthday, so I asked for cash. Everyone, even my wife wanted to throw me a party as it was a substantial one this time around. Forget it I said, take the money you would spend and just hand it to me....et voila I got enough to purchase the Yaqin MS-12B (I think they took up a collection).

Here's what I have gone from -> Pioneer SA-7500 with a Garrard 95B (got it to work enough to understand vinyl is really the only medium), NLA
to -> Rebuilt MG2As, NHT SW-2, Technics SL-1200 MK2, Yamaha PC-2002M, and a Yaqin MS-12B, and still with Digital Audio as it's convenient and sounds great.

Conclusion: I am happy, very very happy. (just wanted to get everyone's attention with the angry part). The soundstage has opened up, the speakers sing, and I am now going to sell most of my stuff.

Thanks to everyone that has helped, suggested, thought I was crazy, and generally assisted in this addiction. Thanks to the people that keep this site running as I probably would have been lost otherwise. Oh, and did I mention I haven't even setup the TT yet as my rack isn't ready. I swear if the vinyl sounds at least as good as the digital, the only thing left to purchase will be more vinyl.

I will now do the happy dance :banana::banana::banana:

Your post has infuriated me

I'm glad it's worked out for you, enjoy the music, enjoy your family and friends. Life can be wonderful, eh (just wanted to get your atention with the infuriated part).

Yes indeed! If you havew been here for a year you have purchased at leasst 10 pieces of gear and probably more and now that you have your Maggies (my personal favorite) and some power to push them it only gets better from here. The vinyl will trump the digital and you Will come over to the Dark Side. :D Vinyl that is. Enjoy. :thmbsp:

I'm a few months behind you on the quest, and I've just started thinking about tubes, and the Yaqin has caught me eye recently. I don't have the cash, though, and am thinking I should first get better headphones and perhaps an RCM, buy yeah ... tubes...

I just recapped my Yaqin with Mundorf Supremes and Multicap RTX. Upgraded some of the electrolytics and bypassed the big filter caps with Panasonic Polycaps. Cost me about $100 and it was a major improvement. I suggest this as your next step toward Audio Nirvana.

Holy crap! I actually didn't even understand your first sentence. Did you take any pics of the upgrade?

Great story. Was just thinking this morning how nearly satisfied I am in my quest. But then again, I'm certain to think of some "improvement" I need to make.
Happy listening, and enjoy the family and friends who've helped make it possible.

Hope you enjoy your system for years to come & glad you have stepped into the Vinyl Zone! :thmbsp:

Cool post. You actually got to satisfaction rather quickly. FYI, don't be surprised if after listening and enjoying for a year or two and you can recognize what your system may be lacking, it can start all over again. But until then, just shut up and listen.:D

for a while i thought i was happy with a crappy computer speaker set up.
Now were upto having what you see in my avatar. ZAnd just to the left of that system is our vynil rig. Not to mention what we have in our bed rooms.
Nice that you found your happy medium.

You're the first one this has happened to. None of us here have this problem.

Absolutely, what happened to you? We all got this right the first time, right out of the box :)

:lmao:

Nice to hear you've found the gear that "does it for you". You'll probably want to re-scratch the "upgrade itch" from time to time in the future, but definitely there comes a time when the emphasis should shift from the gear/hardware to the music/software. My guess is that tube rolling and cartridge rolling are not too far off...

You'll probably go through phases with the LPs, too; getting lots of cheap LPs in the beginning as you start to build up the collection, but becoming pickier over time about just what titles, and in what condition, you'll want to get and let stay on your shelves. It's all part of the wonderful roller-coaster of the audio hobby! Enjoy the ride - it's worth every minute of pleasure along the way!

Well done on your system. It's taken me almost 10 years to get to the point where you're at now. But, when it happens, it is a very Good Thing™.

And a long, detailed post- a man after my own heart.

A little while ago an esteemed AK member posed the question WHY? Why spend time and energy on mediocre equipment and multiple systems. As a neewb I have asked myself that and couldn't really answer.

But a month or two ago I never really knew anything audio. Apparently. I never knew people ran Macintosh tube amps for instance. Now I can happily say I have seen, heard, touched one hooked up to some Advents. Another "...ooooh. That's how it's supposed to sound? Can I hear that again please?" moments.

So I guess like everything else in life this audio thing is yet another journey. A journey with no end and no answers. Just an evolution.
