I couldn’t believe eBay did this.

kaplang

Works for me !
I placed an offer on an item and wanted to pick it up. I didn’t trust that the seller would pack it correctly and it would possibly get damaged. I said in the offer that I would pick it up if the seller would allow me too otherwise i wouldn’t buy it. The seller excepted my offer and my terms. I Paypal paid for it and drove yesterday to pick it up and all was good. Today I get a message from the seller asking me to tell EBay I did get it and was happy with what I got. The seller also told me that EBay wouldn’t release the payment until they knew i did get it and was satisfied, which I did.

The fact that EBay wanted me to verify pickup and satisfaction before they would release the funds was a big surprise to me. I didn't know they would do that and I didn’t even have to ask them too. I think it’s a good policy.

I constantly see eBay getting hammered on AK but they did do the right thing. Being an EB seller myself since 1997 and having sold hundreds of items I have had very few problems with the buyers and sellers I have dealt and with EBs always changing policies.

Something odd.

I’ve had locals pickup and I only had to mark the item shipped. No funds hold.

But, the retards at eBay are have some special problems with their system.

Oh, and the “new and improved” seller protection is total PR BS. I already got burned again, same old crap.

Sellers beware.

It may have simply been that the seller didn't have enough feedback yet. I think you need to have around 20 positive feedbacks otherwise Ebay can hold the funds for up to a month. Positive feedback/proof of receipt of goods for the transaction will release the funds. Once you are established with good responses you no longer have to deal with this restriction.

Good observation Sandstrom.
The feedback is probably what instigated it. I didn’t think of that. The seller had no sales and zero feed back. Their sign up date was a couple of days before the item was listed.

When I used to sell on eBay - I'd take PayPal for items that were to be shipped (always with tracked delivery), but anything collected in person was strictly cash only, no exceptions - simply because the alternative was (and is) wide open to abuse & fraudulent 'item not received' claims.

Sellers beware...

That can work both ways. A buyer may pickup and pay cash. Then later discover something that wasn’t described in the listing. Since they paid case they have no recourse.

Buyers beware.

Ebay is cracking down on local pickup. They have mystery shoppers going out and catching sellers who meet buyers locally and then sell in cash. I get messages asking for local pickup from time to time and when I reply they must complete through ebay, they lose interest. This is not to say local pickup is impossible. Local pickup for large items is common. Next time, ask the seller to modify the listing to local pickup only and go from there.

With the OP's blessing...damn right sellers beware. I lost my "preferred seller" rating or what BS they call it because a buyer bought in error and opened a return case. He admitted he made a mistake and still my rating got dinged. I then had USPS break a golf club in two. The buyer opened a case and sent pictures of the mangled box. All my listings get shuffled to the end because the algorithm thinks this is my fault. EFFBAY. Rant over.

What items are you getting burned on?

I don’t think eBay cares about a cash payment as long as you mark payment received. They still get their cut. I was bumped because of a defect last month also. Didn’t seem to effect my sales.

It’s more of a PayPal deal than anything and more seller protection than buyer. Happened to someone Discogs doing a local deal, paid via PayPal, then buyer claimed they never received it. Was an expensive album to, but seller couldn’t provide tracking number to PayPal and got screwed. Buyer was refunded.
