I have to confess, I played with my Tone Controls

Not to adjust for music, but more to adjust for my Speakers and Room. I have no intention of tweaking them differently between one disk or album and another but more-so trying to find a happy medium in sound between two systems I have.

I was playing Pandora via my OPPO93 thru 2 different systems at the same time. One is Bright while my main speakers seem to lack some midrange and highs. I could stand in the kitchen and hear one system with one ear, and the other with other ear, sort of stereo image using two systems.

It made me remember why I Iove my old Continental Clearfields so much. They are rich in midrange and upper detail. They just did not mate properly with my new Luxman and I reverted back to Dynaudio 82s in my main setup.

So just to take my own advice and try something for first hand real world experience, I backed off on the Bass some, and boosted the Treble a little more than what I backed off the Bass.

So far I am liking the change in sound. I will fiddle a little bit more but plan to find a spot to just set it and forget it.

In the Bright system, I tamed the brightness with ICs or it would have remained fatiguing.

So, although I am still not on board with using TCs to adjust for every disk or album I play, I am appreciating the ability to change the sound a little. As per changing controls for the music itself, I got to thinking. If the track is lacking in bass, what am I boosting if I up the Bass Control? My answer to myself is that I am boosting the lack of bass. If it isn't there to begin with, what am I really boosting.

OK, the can of worms is opened again :)

I use mine. Some loudness for LPs and treble cut for CDs. I could probably adjust the speaker's treble control down then buy another cart that might offer more high freq. I don't know. What I'm doing now works and costs nothing.

I use TCs on certain recordings more often than adjusting for the room or the system. When the source is less than ideal, especially with tape hiss on home-made cassettes, I turn the treble down. I also do it on extra bright albums like Leftoverture or Iron Maiden's debut.

I'm with you admitting to the world that I have used the tone controls.

But I remain silent to the question of using the loudness switch.

Yeah my Loudness Switch and Circuits only see use at the very lowest volume when my wife is not in the mood for music at moderate level.....

Some of these YouTube videos of guys selling or just demonstrating Technics SA Receivers have the Loudness Switch on and tone controls up and then have the Volume Knob on near 12 o'clock !!... WTF!
I say WTF! Because if I put my Techincs SA 600 or 800 on anything above 11 o'clock position my speakers would not only be damaged but it would be so frickin Loud and start to clip the Amplifier Section of the Receiver..... Let alone these guys have the Loudness Switch on!!!!...
F-ing Moron's!
