I love Ebay

but.... I hate sellers who don't know how to pack for safe shipment. :(
"Both hinges on the lid are in great shape everything is here and ready to go. I have much experience shipping turntables and I always package these extra careful." NOT!!

Turn tables are the toughest item to buy and receive in good shape on eBay. I sold a H/K Rabco ST8 Table on EBay, and the time it took to pack correctly almost made me wish I had not sold it!
Too bad about your misfortune,
Jim

i'm not defending anyone, that said I think shipping turntables are the most challenging and i certainly have passed on many thorens in the last few years because of it. blaming ebay seems unreasonable and I for one continue to be thankful for its existance. Happy New Year

Isn't the thread title "I love eBay" misdirected sarcasm? Shouldn't it instead be something along the lines of "I love sellers who don't know how to pack for safe shipment"? I fail to see how eBay, as a mere intermediary, can be blamed for damage caused by a poor packaging.

Having said that, I am sorry to hear that the TT got destroyed.

I'm not defending anyone either, but that is one of the worst packing jobs I've ever seen. :thumbsdn:

If it were me, I'd neg the guy just for the poor packing, regardless of whether I got a refund or could return it, etc. That might save the next person from getting damaged goods from the same crap packing. It doesn't really seem like ebay's fault that this guy didn't pack it right.

Don't get me wrong, I got most of my gear from it but almost every pice had damage of some kind from lazy packing.

FWIW, don't expect any insurance coverage on that becasue the seller failed to provide 2" of padding on all sides; that looks like 3/4-1" foam to me. The seller needs to make an adjustment.

the other comment has to do with the foam itself. I tend not to use it as it is stiff and tends to TRANSMIT shocks, not absorb them. Put it this way; would you hold a piece of 2" styrofoam on your face and then ask someone to punch you on the nose??? Probably not...

I used balled up shrink wrap from work as it is soft, compressible with less force and conforms to the shape of the item. I also wrap every item in bubble wrap before it gets packed in with the shrink. 1000s of items shipped with only a handful of issues, all of which were corrected by the shipping companies.

Sorry about your loss

I'm always amazed when people leave dust covers, platters and counterweights on, these all have to be packed seperatly at minimum. Most platters are removable. I will not buy a TT on eBay unless it's in original factory box and then double boxed. It's too bad as there are lots of nice TT's out there that I pass on or are destroyed in shipping. I once bought a parts unit and the seller put the TT in a box, sliding around, with no packing material at all, needless the say the TT was now completly useless. :(

Is that the tonearm counterweight lying loose there, in the bottom right hand corner? If so, how many dents and scratches were caused by that thing banging around?

I was thinking the same thing yesterday, when my Kenwood KR-6400 showed up. I believe the packing was marginal at best, but when the box is sitting upside down, with the tape popped opened, I started praying. Amazingly, the receiver was intact. I attribute this more to the stout build, than the packaging & Penske delivery. Sorry to hear about your turntable.

I just had to deal with this crap too. Four times over. The one that really bothered me I did complain about and the seller graciously agreed to my compensation request. I think most mean well but have no clue just how rough shipping is on electronics. I wish I could give lessons. I'm proud of my ebay feedback. The stuff I sell arrives intact! Maybe I can put something together and post it to Ebay or the web. Plastic bag it, tape it up, 2 - 3 in. ALL AROUND into a snug sturdy double wall box.

So you were the one that outbid me at the last second on that Pioneer TT...lol

In all seriousness I am sorry about your transaction. It totally sucks to await your reward, and then open up a train wreck. I hope everything gets righted to your satisfaction.

I'm starting to get used to it

I bet... and a little mor shaking would have made the platter come off and beat up the arm and all the rest...

Kenwood receiver inside a T-shirt as "packing" material

That is how one seller shipped a receiver to me.
It was banged up.....but it still worked!?
