• Please note that there are a few updates and clarifications made in the Audiokarma Rules, mostly relating to advertising and the addition of the new "Paying it Forward" & "Giving back" forums in the AudioKarma Audio Marketplace section.

I may have just lost all my "audiophile" credibility.

illegals?

Next upgrade. Keep an eye out for one of these. Found this at a local high school junk fest, found in an old AV closet I expect.

I've also got the matching external speaker - glorious multi-mono 2.0!

It's clear to me you love your grand daughter. You got her the gift she would want and enjoy - not what your audiophile sensibilities might deem to be best. I hold you in the highest regard choosing a thoughtful gift.

I bought that 45 in the PX at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona when it came out. It made news in that it was a Japanese singer using Japanese lyrics at number one on the pop charts... think it was number one, very close otherwise. Being an Army brat living on base among many who had been in the Pacific theater, never once did I hear anybody say anything derisive about it... everybody liked it, still do. Many of those same people who might have been in the Pacific war also spent time during the occupation and no doubt had good experiences in Japanese clubs where many fine singers left an impression. The record got away from me. I remember that it was very well recorded, the regular stereo version is quite good.

I too, was an Army brat, and then, served in SE Asia. I can still remember when that song played on the radio.

A Taste Of Honey (Classic Masters) and Bobby Caldwell (Perfect Island Nights) did very nice versions of Sukiyaki.

A record player is ALWAYS the perfect gift for a loved child/grandchild. Seeing the thrill from them is worth everything. In fact, I still remember my own thrill when I got this for Christmas of 1956:

As for "Sukiyaki", I was here in the States when it came out and, even though none of us knew what it meant, it was so infectious, you couldn't help but love it.

Good thing about these is that they're built to be idiot/kid-proof & will play about anything successfully & last forever. I wish I knew where the one I think I still have is lurking, so I could preview some of the obscure, beat-up records I bring home to clean for the thrift shop I volunteer at. Save my good stuff for the good stuff.

It does have external speaker jacks though and I've got a pair of Dayton B 652's in the shed.

Hey Skipper. Do you have the regular version, or the "air" version? I'd love to hear your review of these speakers. They seem like a heck-uva value.

just have the originals. They aren't bad but nothing exceptional. But, they may be the best speakers I could have bought for $35, the price when i bought them. Great surrounds or remote speakers though, ...or starter speakers for a grand-daughter. though.
