I think I'm done with big amps.

I just wonder what AK would be like if no one would reveal what they owned.

Something like this.......

Newbie: Please recommend me a nice low wattage amp

AKer1: I like mine, maybe you will too

Newbie: Great, what is it?

AKer2: The one I use makes great music

Newbie: Great, what is it?

AKer3: Mine sounds much better than AKer1 and AKer2's amps, I'm sure

Newbie: Great, what is it?

I believe I did visit with Ray at AKfest, real nice guy and as he said he's willing to build to suit! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~snip~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That Ray is a real Multi-Talented guy!

Which reminds me, I need a new suit. I wonder how much he'd want for a regular single-vent tweed jacket with a pair of matching trousers?

John, have you given any thought to Odyssey amplifiers? They seem to be well liked by their owners. I believe they can be highly customized, are built here in the midwest and have a 20 year warrenty.

I have one of the older stereo models with the upgraded caps. They use even better parts now and Klaus has recommended I send mine back for the upgrade.

It has lots of bass but lacks a bit of midrange compared to my Counterpoint which I use 85% of the time. They are also wired internally with Groneberg cabling.

Two things you should know. First, the only tweed I have to work with right now is grill cloth left over from a retro guitar cab I built for the Fedex delivery guy. On the upside, it's pretty much acoustically transparent. Second, I only do ported trousers. I found that getting the leg holes tight enough for a truly sealed pair tends to turn your feet purple.

That's why I like this forum, you can learn from the experts!
I wonder if I could find a pair of socks and a tie to match the purple feet?

Best Regards,
Terry

I pretty much walk away from the hobby except for listening from late April until Halloween every year. The year is too short to miss the outdoor season in the northern states.

I don't agree, both days of Summer here in Seattle tend to be the longest of the year.

Tweed? I pictured you in dark blue sharkskin and Italian loafers with see through socks.

Hell yes, with my slicked back hair and pencil moustache, I'm perhaps the best looking salesman on the whole used car lot.

(Actually it's more like Levi's, T-shirts and Tenny Runners)

You talkin' ta me?
YOU TALKIN' TO ME???? :nutz:

Yeah, I wasn't thinking PNW. Though I was thinking of the season of long daylight in the north.

I know how that goes! But this just may be for keeps. I'm tired of this hobby. Its no fun for me anymore, I jumped in too quickly and burned myself out. Part of taking a break and stepping back is arriving at a system to be done with, a "last" system before I go back to just listening to music for a while, and riding my bike, and reading all these books and playing guitar and all this other fun stuff I did before audio. I don't see me ever having speakers that need that amount of wattage...

The quest for better sound. This site can really help to suck you into it for sure, and have seen some people go to extraordinary lengths to achieve it.
But as Donberry eluded to-it's a never ending one. It can be tiring. Both to ones self and wallet. Tempering it usually seems to work for me. Of late, I have used upgrading my 2 pairs of AMT3's as the tempering agent.-as It takes allot of time with my schedule, and it's relatively inexpensive, and educational to boot.
In the mean time, I get to listen to a few older set's of speakers in the rotation, which gives me a better feel for the direction I'm headed.
Luckily, I pretty much have my electronics set, and use the speakers to get the sound/voicing I'm looking for. Each person goes a different path, demands, etc -but this one keeps me from switching out too many components and losing site, or slipping back, of the progress I've made. More or less my "break".

Ha! That's staying. I'm listening to it now. What a sweet little amp. It's actually sitting on top of the unused Levinson no432. I kind of want to listen to the big amp but I'm comfortable and don't feel like switching the speaker cables. Which would take all of a minute.

One thing that keeps things in perspective for me, is that I see a lot of live music. In the past month I've probably spent more time in front of live musicians as I have my stereo. I just got back from seeing M.Ward an hour ago...what a fantastic show! The sound at the show was bad at all..no real soundstage but it was all clear, and it didn't really matter, the music was good and man can that guy sing and play guitar. It helps remind me why I got into all of this..the music. The gear I've been chasing for about the past year has been decidedly music-focused and not.....

From late April until Halloween sounds like the time to stay indoors for some of us.

Bob_in_OKC,
Yeah, this is a big country, no bout a doubt it.

I like live music to remind me of why I like my setup. I like my setup to remind me of why I like live music.

How about letting me borrow it then? Promise to send it back real soon. Will even send you one of mine so you won't have to wrestle with your boat anchor.
