If VW deceived consumers about its diesel cars, then it has a huge problem

You suppose a exec got a golden parachute retirement from the profits with this decision before it blew up?

Interesting, as I have a Seat Alhambra, which has such engine.

There is some discussion about the real-world situation (so guess this might not be limited to one brand)

Edit (as more people chimed in at same time) : so in this particular case, as mine is from 2002, there are no advances but they just cheating? apart from the fines this rather is some BIG piece of a bad attitude of the car maker also.

Really shocking news, and disgusting if it's true. I always thought of VW as such a cool iconic and forward thinking brand. German engineering and efficiency, great design all the way around. This would utterly destroy their entire brand image they've worked so hard to build IMO.

All car makers "cheat" to get the best MPG so to speak . I mean they optimize their cars to get good mileage for their CAFE numbers . But this is totally different .

I was at the mechanic a few years back and asked why a pump on my Mercedes did not have a rubber belt connected. He explained it was an air pump that blew fresh air in the exhaust to get the emissions down. It robbed power (and increased fuel consumption) so he took the belt off!

Unbelievable.

The Environmental Protection Agency accused the German automaker of using software to detect when the car is undergoing its periodic state emissions testing. Only during such tests are the cars’ full emissions control systems turned on. During normal driving situations, the controls are turned off, allowing the cars to spew as much as 40 times as much pollution as allowed under the Clean Air Act, the E.P.A. said.

It's in the same vein as this:

Article in Tech Times

ExxonMobil is known to have spent millions of dollars to promote climate denial but an investigation by InsideClimate News revealed that Exxon's own research dating back as early as the 1970s has confirmed the link between the burning of fossil fuels and global warming.

The early 70's was the "new ice age" period .

Every year that our 1997 Chevy PU and 2002 Tahoe needed smogs, they always went on the dyno - until last year. When I took the Tahoe in, all he did was plug a gizmo into the computer and let it idle. He later told me that cars built after 2000 don't need to go on the dyno anymore - just a computer scan.

It would appear that VW figured that out and programmed their systems to "lie" when plugged in. Probably one of the engineer's 12 year old kid figured out how to do that.
