If you had $2000+ to spend on a set of medium size speakers what would be some of the ones you would consider?

More info:
vintage or new? New.
What type(s) of music do you listen to generally? Rock to Jazz [everything].
Room size? 12x18
What is your amplification? Kenwood KA 8100 and later a tube amp.

Thank you,

Rob

No, seriously, do want vintage or new? What type(s) of music do you listen to generally? Room size? What is your amplification? We need more info....

What size is "medium" - small towers? Also check out audiogon, full range speakers, for used speakers.

Do not buy any speakers that have the word "digital" anywhere on them, or in their advertising.

You could also check out new Magnepans -

Look for some used Magnepans. As long as you have the power to drive them they'll sing like no other.

EDIT: On second thought, I don't know how practical a pair of Magnepans would be if you would need to pay for shipping to Hawai'i. :p:

Medium size for me, might not be for you
JBL 250ti
JBL Ti10k

Medium sized Westlake, Genelac, or Makie studio monitors, Tannoy dual concentrics,
JBL 4430s, B & W 700 series. Lots of *great* speakers in that price range.

Depends:
-What type of music do you listen to?
-What type of supporting equipment do you have?
-Are you willing to upgrade/change your supporting gear (ie.: go from 400 watt SS monoblocks to 300b SET tubes if the speakers are skewed to SET)?
-What SPL do you normally listen to/what's the max SPL you expect?
-What is your listening room like?
-Are you open to used and new?
-Do you like: Horns/planars/'stats/cones/dipoles/ported/transmission line/coaxials/single-driver/multi-drivers?
-Do you lean toward: warm, flat, clinical, fat, bloated, analytical, or ?
-What have you owned in the past that you liked and disliked?

Hawaii is interesting when it comes to used gear. There can be some very interesting finds, and some stellar prices. With the Asian influence, high median income and large US Military presence; I've seen some pretty cool stuff over there that I would have jumped on if shipping to MN would not have been so cost prohibitive.

In short, I think you'll get as many answers to your question as there are posts. Only you can decide what you like, but once we get to know you and your system, at least you won't be deciding between K-horns, Usher Tiny Dancers and used electrostat dipoles, that are as different from one another as you can get.

I have a few favorites (or things I think would be favorites) in many different categories. Depends...

Eggleston Andra's, they should be getting down into that price range by now. A "current capable" amplifier will be needed to drive them well.

A set of Tannoy Kingdoms IF I could snag them for that amount.
There's a set of B&W 802 Matrix FS for far less or Martin Logan CLS II's FS for a bit less here.

Some great options already here.

I would look for....

Within your budget I'll look for used Swans/Hi-Vi (amazing speakers), Paradigm Studio monitors or used B&W. With 2000 bucks you can find truly amazing high end used speakers.
