Ignoring the FM on the MX 113, how good is the MX 113 as a pre amp

I have read alot lately (a wonderful diversion in these times) about hi fi gear and wondered about the mx 113. I understand that while the tuner is quite good how the FM output signal is handled in the 113 is not a great design. But simply as a preamp for CD, tape, phono, how does the MX 113 stack up, especially the phono section? Thanks. Norm

Except for the C26s varible loudness, the MX113,114, and 115 are virtually identical to the C26.

So the single rail power supply design becomes the limiting factor and all the unit's SQ improve greatly as the PS is upgraded.

The tuner shares much of the same circuits as the much vaunted MR73 and MR74.

Indeed - no complaints here except for the loudness circuit which adds a huge dollop of LF boost with no means of variation which strangely has no effect on HF contour. I rarely have need for it anyway which I suspect is the case for the majority of users so a non-issue for the most part.

I read that piece about the audio output circuits of the FM section but I really don't find it's any the worse for it, at least nowhere near what it's being made out to be. Phono and line inputs are just what would be expected of a McIntosh, which is to say excellent, assuming serviced/restored and operating to spec.

Well the MX tuner section certainly passes through all the tone circuits, but so do the tape inputs.

As for the phono EQ, looking at the schematic I don't think there is a way to switch out the RIAA eq components so I don't think so.

Reads more like buyer remorse and excuse and a scrambling seller.....

I really wasn't thrilled with the 113 or the 110 I had and neither made the cut here. They did everything but they didn't do everything well imo. An analogy that comes to mind would be to an on and off road motorcycle. It travels both terrains but it doesn't excell at either.

I like my 114 just fine, tuner is excellent and sensitive. I use it with a MC250 and quite happy although some may consider these on the low end side of Mac gear. Both units have been restored.

Motorstereo, were the two units you had fully restored? Just wondering. Thanks. Norm

The 113 had been to Audio Classics for service and the 110 had extensive servicing done locally. There's lots of love for those 2 models and who knows it may have been the luck of the draw that I somehow picked a pair of lackluster performers:dunno:
