I'm going to pick up a pair of old speakers for free!

Those things need some walnut colored Danish oil. The scratches will disappear. Mostly. Too bad the grill is missing, they'd look real nice. You could just tell people you left one off to show off.

Helpful info! And yeah.. one off to show.. not a bad idea. I have one of them hooked up to the system. Right now I have (1) AR 2ax, (1) Sansui SP 1500, and (2) KLH Model 100's hooked up. Sounds really really good.

Those are some decent speaks. I had a pair I restored, about the same shape as yours were in. They have some real thick walnut veneer on them, if you are careful you can sand 'em down and restain them. The sealer is very thick, so most of your scratches are probably in that.

That said, they can take about 100 watts max, a good SX780 can bottom them out. They do have kick to them, and dig into sub territory if you place them right and hit the loudness button. They are _very_ efficient, 15 watts RMS is all they need to blow you out of a room. I would sugguest recapping them, but there are so many danged caps in the x-over's it would cost a bit to do it.

The dome tweet's are nice though, but don't take power well. The cabinets are lined with diamond pleated wool and the magnets on the mids are AlNiCo. The woofers have 2" voice coils and a 6.5" magnet on the back (yes they are HEAVY.) The woofs say 20 watts on them. Very nice midrange, but not for critical listening, and due to the bazillion drivers they don't image well.

Thanks for the info. This is helpful. I will look this up later on when I'm fixin em.

That's a lot of drivers in that cabinet! An EQ built into the crossover too? Neat.
That's not an EQ - it's an L-pad adjuster. This attenuates the signal going to the high and midrange drivers to suit the room and your listening tastes.

Lots of drivers in an arrangement like that tend not be to great for imaging as the sound comes from many point sources.

I figured "important listening" was like listening to Beethoven's Third Symphony and thinking about how Napoleon represented the failed promise of the French Revolution.

I don't think that to many drivers is the imaging problem. I have some older infinitys with multiple drivers and they image very nicely. Same can be said about my klh12's. I do agree though that the jap kabukis do not image at all. They seem to spread the sound out all over the place.

Ahh, interesting. Maybe it's to do with dispersion patterns rather than number of sources? Or time alignment?

I'm kind of familiar with the line array theory...ish. That seems to be a different matter.

Can anyone who knows better than me elaborate? I'm interested! :D
