So for the past three months or so I have been saving up my pennies with the plan to jump into tubes with a st35 kit from triode electronics. Figuring that an st35 kit would cost me about 500 buck plus the price of tubes plus shipping, I would end up somewhere over 600 when all said and done.
I was browsing the old auction site just for fun on sunday night and came across this st70. The buy it now price on this plus shipping ended up being about 505 total. It was a no brainer. Even if there are anysurprises and it needs any tinkering, thats fine with me.
It does look like that one cap got a little close to an iron, easily replaced if needed.
I'm super stoked ! I'll likely run it briefly, then very soon get that cap board moved underneath the chassis.
Below is the description from the seller:
1. You will notice there is no 5AR4 to be seen. This is because this amplifier has been modified to use Solid State rectification. However, unlike 99% of solid state rectified ST70s you'll find this one has a power transformer that was designed by Van Alstine and Sound Valves to deliver the correct voltage to compensate for the lack of voltage drop acrros the 5AR4. This means the correct B+ voltage is delivered but has much better current capability as the transformer has a much higher current capability than the stock unit. Most of you know the stock transformer in a ST-70 is its biggest limiting factor.
2. The Can Cap was replaced by a circuit board containing Panasonic TSU caps as per instructions again from Frank Van Alstine. I had plans of moving this board under the chassis and to be clear... THERE IS HIGH VOLTAGE ON THIS BOARD SO THIS AMP NEEDS TO BE RUN WITH THE COVER ON UNTIL THIS IS DONE. I would not recommend using this amp until this is done.
3. Under the chassis a 100uf Cerafine cap was also installed into the power supply. All and all I think you can agree that this dynaco has a very stiff power supply and is a huge improvement over a stock unit.
4. The stock 7199 driver board has been rebuild and is equiped with Dumont branded 7199s. These 7199s have less than 40 hours on them after I purchased them as NOS for this amplifier after recieving it.
5. Also included with this amp is a Triode/SDS EF86 / 12AU7 Driver board that has been stuffed and is ready to mount if you desire to do so. .
6. The SDS Winged C EL34s all still test very well. They all tested 75% on my tube tester where %55 is considered minimum.
7. It comes with a nice more modern black cage.
8. The output transformers are original dynaco with cloth leads.
9. It has had better speaker connectors installed and wired for 8ohms. (Can be changed to 4 or 16 ohms if that is what you need).
10. The chassis is an original chassis and just needs a little bit of polishing.
11. The bottom of the chassis is a newer replacement.
