Infinity Reference Four Tower

Hey everybody. I'm brand new here and don't know the first thing about speakers, let alone Infinity's.

My dad used to have a pair of Infinity Reference 4's when I was a kid and my brothers and I ended up busting them. His birthday is coming up and I thought about buying a set on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Nice...AOSwBRlcgezN:sc:FedExHomeDelivery!48933!US!-1

With the shipping price the total cost would be about $450 which seems pretty heavy. Does anybody have any insight? Is that a relatively fair price? Inflated?

Anything helps, thank you!

Not worth it, at all. I had Five's and barely got $100 locally.

Where are you located? Maybe you can find similar Infinity speakers on Craigslist? But then it's sentimental, so you do want the Reference 4 specifically. If you get a pair from Craigslist, you will need to buy the surrounds and replace them. But what are the likely chances that someone local may have these for sale, ready to go, with such short notice?

Yeah I've looked on Craigslist here locally and haven't come up with anything. I live in Lansing, MI so it's not a huge market. Looked at a couple shops as well, haven't come up with anything

There's a shop N of Detroit that specializes in vintage audio, haven't been there but see their ads on CL occasionally. Maybe?

Obviously I don't know your or your dad, but if I were the recipient, I'd be extremely happy to get an upgrade over what was destroyed (I assume a long time ago).

Definitely something I've thought about. I take it from some of the responses to this thread that they're not all that nice of speakers to begin with? If that's the case I'll probably look towards getting something a bit better quality

They are good speakers, just not at that eBay asking price. Additionally, everyone is saying that to find the exact model locally is like hitting a jackpot, so to expand your options a little. I like the Infinity Reference 5 or 6, and the Crescendo series 3006, 3007, 3008, 3009. Most of those will require replacement of foam surrounds on the woofers and midranges. I just did a pair of 3008, and it took a lot of time to do the six drivers. Also, look for the newer series of Kappa, 6.1, 7.1, 8.1. That should keep you in the Infinity family with the EMIT tweeter, and they all have similar sonic signature...

Actually if you find any Infinity with an EMIT-R, it's likely to be nearly as good as, if not as good as or better than the Reference Four. Older and higher end Infinities used the regular EMIT, nothing wrong with that either.
