A friend of mine has a pair of Infinity RSIIIB speakers The woofers are black and marked 902 5079 . I used to sell these back in the mid 80s and the woofers were clear and marked 902 2279 as I recall. I have heard they are interchangeable?? Whats the deal? Thanks

There isn’t a great deal of info on the actual parameters of these different drivers. The tech sheet shows the replacement as..

I've seen several different models of Infinity over the years (well, seen in pics, not IRL) where they've had both clear and opaque woofers. Infinity was infamous for changing parts through a manufacturing run without modifying the model number.

Note it says sub 902 2279 They have two different parts numbers The BLACK ones he has have 902 5079 I have always seen them with the CLEAR ones marked 902 2279 . I have never seen a pair with black ones in an RS IIIb circa 1986 87 and I sold these when i worked in the bizz. Always clear. Hence the confusion.

I think they are from one of the newer (than 85-86) and less expensive SM models - the ones with vinyl instead of oak veneer. They also look like the woofers in the Late 80's Kappa 9 models but those were 12" so it can't be those... How do they sound?

If they have the bullet center cap I would take a guess that someone painted the cones maybe due to them yellowing over time. Another clue that they have ben touched at some point is the orange letter on the mid dome driver. That was used on the RS IIIa. RS IIIb has blue lettering on the mid and EMIT face plates. There are 4-5 different part numbers for the 10" poly-cone woofers. Some had the gray poly material(490780) other clear(490781). Some had gray frames and others had black. The later factory replacement 902-2279A had a regular black convex center cap. Funtionally all the same

They have the correct RS woofer trim ring/basket, so I wonder if they were reconed at some point?
