Information on ADS L-810's

I have come into what I think may be a very good deal on what the current owner says are a pair of "pristine" ADS L-810's. Information on the web is limited and couldnt find any comparables on Ebay. Any and all information would be highly appreciated including value. Are there any more common speakers they could be compared to?

Thanks in advance

your not from IL are you? i got beat out for a pair of local pickup only... :)

I feel that the 810s are a great speaker.....the dome tweeter is the magic part of that speaker. I don't really know of any to compare it to, as i haven't heard many other domes...sorry!! But i think you will be happy with your purchase!

A/D/S L-810 Specs

Here are some specs from 1980 on the upper line of A/D/S. I have one L-520 (needs a mate!) and a fine set of L-620s (the biggest two-way they made). Always interested me that the L-730 had a wider freq response with its single 10-inch bass driver than the L-810.

Hope you get the L-810s, they are a very good and precise speaker. "Laid back" is a common term to describe them, say vs. "up front" for JBLs. Some L-810s I've seen them sell from about $200--$400/pair + shipping on ePrey.

i dont know of any other speaker that sounds similar to the ADS. i would describe the sound as sweet, dont know of any term that fits better. i have a pair of L-810's and i love them.

The A/D/S pretty much had the same sound throughout their ealry years. I'm sure there are those out there who do not like their sound buy, no one I know. It is about as safe a speaker for enjoyment as you can get save possibly the standard issue original Advent.

I have the small 300s which is the same as the 310 but had a foam surround tweeter and they've been with me since new in 1980. Just a good 'ole speaker.

The L-810s will be an excellent speaker with the right upstream equipment.

thanks again guys...the seller tried to raise the price on me a bit, maybe he did a little research?? he sent me some pics and they look clean....ill be running them with my marantz 2385 so i dont think ill have any problems driving them....the pics he sent have the units on stands....was this a stock feature? considering what you've seen them for on ebay its still a great deal so im going to get them tomorrow...ill let you know how they are when i pic them up

Count the cash in front of him and make him understand that a quick sale may be the better way especially since he had quoted you a price already. The A/D/S with the 2385 sounds like you will have a really good start on a dynamite system. Tell us what you think after listeing for awhile.

Thanks for all the input guys. I just went and picked them up and got them for $85 w/ the speaker stands. Just plugged them into the Marantz and they sound wicked. The highs and mids are just sick. A little lacking on the bottom end though (could use a sub) but all and all just awesome. Ill be running them in the bedroom with the Marantz and my dj gear. I've moved the HPM 1100's into the living room now all I need is another amp!! I think I'll go for a Sansui or Pioneer...I would ask for suggestions but I figure thats for another thread...Thanks again guys!!!! Never Stop A ROCKIN!!

Mids and highs sick! Lacking bottom end? Something is off? 1) ya got them there tone controls in the flat position? 2) As a youngster did ya listen to music at 140 db? 3) Something is messed up with the speakers, possibly x-over if ya got sond coming fom each driver. The caps are probably due for checking. or 4) my hearing is screwed up since I've never heard any set of A/D/S sound like you are describin them when working correctly, especially the bass. Have you tried moving them around the room to see if the sound changes?

Wow, like Brian, I'm surprised to read this too. Those speakers in an average size bedroom should have a real nice bass and good sound all the way around. I like the brauns better but still, the ADS sound damn good too. Hmmmmm Crossover problem? Doubt it, but maybe... No doubt though they will sound different from the HPMs you are used to. Maybe that's it. Great score for the price though!

When I say "sick" I mean good! The high's and mids are just perfect. I have been running a pair of Pioneer HPM 1100's and the ADS's just dont make the paint peel like the 1100's. So thats what I mean when I say a "little lacking" in the bottom end. The bass is actually very tight and slightly flat almost like a studio monitor. But for the smallish space I have them in there ideal. So dont be alarmed as I am very..VERY pleased...thanks

if not for my nephews i'd have made the same mistake

.... on CL seattle .. for $85 .... those 810's would have evaporated quicker than ether on a stainless steel countertop.

Guilty as charged. I get so confused. Just sick = great. Cool = hot. Rad = never figured it out. Oh, heck, i'm going back into my underground den and submerse myself in the Internal Revenue Code; at leat thaat I understand.

I beleive the 710 and higher were praised for their dome mid, as you are attesting to.
If they are the ones with the metal grills and are in as nice a condition as you say, $400 would probably be the low end. A pair of L1510's have been lagging on eBay for a while, unfortunately for that seller the 710 and 810 seem to be the more sought after version of that A/D/S series.
The woofers were tragically underdone. Examination of the driver will be reminiscent of the Dynaco A-25's bass driver with a narrower surround. Sad little magnet structure, but true-sounding with little or no distortion. Try adding something along the lines of a Dahlquist sub with an outboard crossover and dedicated amp.
I have heard a pair of 710's running off vintage Pioneer seperates, I think it was an 8100 integrated amp. The sound was extremely clean, and I will echo your perception of a weak low-end but vast soundstage. It's all in the mid.

i have a set of L810's....and i drive them with a yamaha A-1 amp. 70 watts per....there is something about the yamaha + ads combo, they just completely compliment each other. when i first heard them, i thought 'Now THERE is a real speaker' authoritative, imaging like crazy, plenty of big tight bass. if you have the opportunity to get a yamaha amp, give it a try. you will be glad you did
