I'm a cabinet maker and audiophile with some newly acquired Sansui units I will be making real wood covers for. I obtained a 7070 and a 5050, both of which need to be made presentable cover wise. I plan on using a 40 year old raw walnut veneer (about the same age as the units give or take) to refinish them. I briefly searched the forum for anyone else doing this and didn't see much. On the auction sites there are really bad renditions available and people seem to be buying them. I could make any cover for any model from scratch, not just refinishing, without to much trouble, in any wood type desired. My question simply boils down to, do you guys need one. I will make mine and once set up , it would be easy to keep banging them out. let me know your opinions and ideas. ...:scratch2:

How would you be applying the veneer to the substrate?
What Substrate would you be using?

Is this veneer 40 years old or were the trees 40 years old when they were harvested? If the veneer is 40, then that tree was born well before the Sansui units but what the heck, it is all good.

Merrylander used to veneer a good number of Yamaha units in a variety of woods. Search should find some examples. Others can to to get an idea of what some different woods look like.

There are some cabinet makers here that have made boxes available. Folks need em.

I'll probably use the vacuum press and plastic powdered resin. The substrate I'm going to use is plywood and maybe a backer veneer as well. The price will probably be determined after I make a few and see how they go. :smoke:

I'd be interested too, but this is something that should probably be in Barter town..per forum rules.

As you can see I'm new here to the forum and really didn't want to talk about this as a proposition to sell anything. If I were to sell anything or discuss that possibility individually with someone, it would indeed be posted in Barter Town.
I seriously doubt that there would be any money to be made from it and that's not why I would do it to begin with, for me it would be a way to "pass some Karma along". I'm not familiar with what a "feeler thread" is, but I have an idea of what it might be and that was not my intention here.

I think those OEM covers are relatively resilient and although the veneered versions of the TOTL model covers are susceptible to dings, scratches and dents, they stand the test of time pretty well. (BTW: The lower X0X0 model covers are plastic wall papered while the TOTL is walnut veneered plywood).

However, I always had a feeling the heavy weights covers needed an extra vent opening plus shroud, above the RF power supply board, to allow for more heat dissipation. The upright angle of the upper chassis prevents free air flow in the guts of the beasts and it's pretty common to see blackened, heat damaged covers, right above that area. Even after the 200 Ohm aluminum wire wound resistor mod the wood cover gets too hot for comfort after a while.

:scratch2: If you're already thinking about redoing the entire thing, perhaps you could mod it to improve it in this respect...

I hadn't given much thought to actually improving the cover design other than it's aesthetics's. I think that would be a pretty beneficial Mod for sure. Thanks

As this subject will result in sales of service, it must go in Bartertown, or the OP must become a vendor per AK rules. The OP is not a subscriber, therefore Bartertown is not available.

Interested parties may PM the OP, but I must close this thread. I'll leave it up for a bit to allow you guys to communicate.
Casey
