Interesting NEC speakers.

If these speakers were closer to me I'd be checking them out already as I'm putting together an NEC system of this vintage (A-10 integrated, T6-E tuner, and a CD-730 and CD-810 cd player). The speakers are about 300 miles from me. Seller is asking 100. Not affiliated with the sale. They look well built and i like the NEC gear i currently have. The seller claims that the holes seen are bass ports but it look to me more like the woofers are missing. Anyone seen these before or have any ideas about the holes or if they are any good? Model RS100.

Zoomed in on the hole and there are clearly four screw holes around the opening. Not worth the drive. Still interesting. Too bad.
 
Looks like a passive radiator should be there. I wouldn't drive 300 miles for them, though...personally. Might sound nice...but needs passives.
 
Seller seemed nice.......not an audio person. The seller got the speakers for free when they bought some appliances "from an upscale local estate". I guess it's for the best as i wasn't looking forward to telling my girlfriend i was spending the weekend roadtripping for another pair of speakers.
 
I know this is old but I had to add that I just saw this same model on reverb in excellent condition for around $600! Never saw them before but they have a nice look, not sure how effective they could be with that layout but definitely not a typical speaker that you'd expect from that period in time. I've ones a few receivers made by NEC, one was a weird surround system with 4 volume buttons from what I remember 10 years ago and the 2 times I tested it. Never would have thought NEC would have made their own speakers, let alone made in the USA!

Not sure if NEC is an American based company way back when, since I always saw their stuff was made in Asia, but these speakers have me wondering now if they even made these or if they were commissioned just for the US market? So few exist, I wish I could hear them. The tweeters look similar to AR from that time. Could they be made by AR?

Nippon Electric Company was and still is based in Japan. They were and still are a LARGE multinational corporation who was involved in many ventures such as Telecommunications, Radio Broadcasting and many others.

They had HUGE buying power so like other entities with the same when they ventured into speakers they contracted with a manufacturer to build and produce and then branded them NEC

*Nippon is another pronunciation of Japan
 
Yes but there's always a chance that they may have originally been called something else and then went over seas and changed the name or bought out by NEC, their speakers were built in the States so they must have had some affiliation with an American company, I don't see them setting up shop over here just for speakers. So there may have been an American NEC division at some time? Or is my reasoning way off?
