Also the "tiny history of hi-fi" article is pretty great reading...the one thing in there that caught my attention particularly is the story about the dynaco ST-70 wired in triode beating all the expensive SS amps...does anyone here have experience with wiring that amp in triode? I have a pair of MK IV's and I'm wondering if they would be improved by triode wiring, and if so how to do it...just cutting the screen and suppressor connections or something?

Triode connection of the outputs simply requires disconnecting the UL tap wires from the screen grids, green and green/white wires, and safely taping or heat shrinking them off. Then the screen grid, pin 4, is connected to the plate, pin 3, via a 100 to 150 ohm 1/2 watt resistor, on each output tube. For the record - I just did the triode conversion on my Mark IV amps and WOW, they sound great! I feel like I'm getting considerably more bass. They sound really nice though. Maybe less detail, but more balls. Which is interesting, since it's like 1/2 the output power.

The "triode" connecting will work better on some amps and tubes then others.

My 6AV5 amp is running "triode" connected and works very well, haven't had the
same experience with most tubes on an ST-70 but Squid has with his quite often.

Well, I was never particularly happy with how these amps sounded - I put Curcio boards in them before ever hearing them stock, but felt like they sounded a bit flat compared to some other things I've heard. They definitely don't sound flat anymore - seems to me much richer and more dynamic. A bit darker, so I inched up the upper-mid attenuation on my Altecs. They sound great to me now.
