is it worth it

Saw a yamaha deck yesterday in a thrift, looked fairly newish, champagne colored quasi space shuttle sleekness, hit eject the whole front opens up. Anyways..it was obviously part of a package system as the only connection on the back was a flat ribbon about 8 or 10 conductors wide. Question is, is it possible or more importantly worth it to try to make this normal? Theres so many decks out there dirt cheap I know..but the question still arose in my mind. I'd assume it were possible with a schem to figure the ribbon out, but I have the idea in my head that these deals operate on strange voltages handed out by the head unit..so as I asked before..is it worthwhile?

so by virtue of no response, I'll assume that the answer to the aforementioned is actually "no, what were you even thinking"

IMHO, if you want to play with the old stuff, then you might as well get the good old stuff. Excellent tape decks can be had these days for pennys on the dollar. You simply have to search a little to find these gems. TOTL models often sell for little more than BOTL models. So why bother with the lesser gear?

Probably not worth messing with unless you just want it for art. I have a couple of things that I never use, but look so good I just keep them on display.

all points well taken, and i certainly exercise going for well built components, this thing was just quite unusual to look at, in fact youd not really guess it was a cassette deck at all, something more like a sleek kitchen appliance, other part was by the looks of the heads, it had never seen a tape. anyways..I was just wondered if anyone had ever taken such a project on, if for nothing else, the giggle of it all.

If the unit appeals to you and it is cheap, then who cares what anyone else thinks?

Personally only the really good stuff gets me excited. But if you happen to like it (for whatever reason), then just get it, and have some fun. To heck with what I or anybody else thinks. :thmbsp:

Well to take the discussion to the next level, we'd need pictures and a model number. Some Yamaha decks were very nice. Most are OK, although I've never had great luck with Yamie decks - but that's just me.

before I'd put any time or energy into a project like this, it would need to be direct drive dual capstan transport. 2 head or 3 is not such a big issue for me as quality tape handling. It this machine has those features, maybe its worth tweaking?

Exactly. I paid $10 for my Onkyo TA-R33, $5 for a Denon DRM-400 that I rehabbed for a friend, and I got a Teac V-something and an Akai GXC-730D (!) in a package deal with a Kenwood receiver, two nice Pioneer speakers and a rack for $20. The Akai and Onk are both excellent pieces, and the other two aren't lame.

I have come close to buying a few different older decks just for the sake of having the vintage gear around and because it was interesting. If you want to go that way its probably fine but may take up alot of your time. I agree with what others have said, the TOTL equipment is out there now for really low dollars. It should be bought and preserved by everyone into this hobby. Save up for the dream deck. Once a nice one sells on the bay tens more come after it. Before long even the most expensive decks will come down a little.

I just finished up cleaning and tweaking a realistic sct-11, and have an Optimus dubbing deck besides, this would be more curiosity than anything else. I think if the adaptation to work with normal equip were relatively painless I'd go for it,just by virtue of styling. Id wondered if anyone else had changed one of these computer ribbon wired things and made the change and how painful it actually was. If that change is virgin territory..whewf the pressure on me huh?
