Is the 6N2P-EV tube interchangeable with the 12AX7/ECC83

I have a tube question, as I have searched for inexpensive replacements for the 12AX7 tubes in my Fisher 400 receiver.

I have been offered a Russian 6N2P-EV tube as a replacement, but I am not sure if in fact it is or is not compleyely compatible, and if not completely compatible, how not so.

Finally, would using this tube in place of the 12AX7 damage my receiver in any way?:scratch2:

Thanks in advance.

IIRC....Some of the phono stage & tone control tubes in the Fisher 400 use 12V DC taken off the bias supply so you would have to rewire those for 6 volt operation......a PITA. Why bother when you can buy new Sovtek 12AX7LPS for about $12/tube? It's a really nice sounding, quiet and reliable tube.

6N2 is NOT plug compatible but the socket can be rewired in some cases (but not for the Fisher preamp tubes, which are DC series wired)

What YOUR Idea Of An Inexpensive 12AX7 ???. . .

You can get new Chinese imports for under $8 a pop.

Sovteks and JJ's for around $10.

TungSol reissues for about $12.

Also, have you tried any of the sponsor's sites here at AK???

G.E. 12AX7's are not popular for some reason and because of that really cheap. I found them to sound better than any Chinese or Russian tube I've tried. The G.E. 7025's are quiet and can be found for what you would pay for the new imports.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever not to get quality vintage 12AX7s. Right now I have a GE long grey plate D getter, a GE 12AX7A short grey plate halo getter, a CBS Hytron 12AX7A long grey plate halo getter, a GE 7025 short grey plate halo getter, a Matsushita 12AX7 short grey plate halo getter, and an RCA long black plate square getter all from the 50s or early 60s in my Fisher X101C and it sounds wonderful. I probably paid no more than 30 clams for the lot! You just have to know what to look for and be a little patient. I got all of them on either CL or Fleabay. Oh, and I've also heard 6 Telefunken ribbed plates in my amp, but since the difference in sound quality was small compared to the first set I mentioned, I sold the Teles and bought another amp with the proceeds! BTW, it had all it's original Tele 12AX7s in it (another 6!)!

I agree with the GE. Very under rated tube with very good sound. I bought quite a few cheap and have been very happy them.
