Is there any use for LARGE old satellite dishes?

steel is barely worth the bother of taking in, especially if its not very nearby. Only real gain you get from it is the space back. Maybe if you're lucky it will pay for the gas to drag it to the yard.

Scrap prices are in fact WAY DOWN.

Down about 70% from 5 years ago.

Scrap steel and scrap stainless steel are both down, the place we used to sell our stainless scrap to won't even take any. The scrap steel gets hauled off just because it's put into one of the roll off bins - #1 steel scrap can't have junk mixed in - but I don't know what they are paying. On the other hand, steel prices for new steel are up over 3X what they were a year ago.

As for the dish, it's not going to do anything if you tossed the receiver years ago, and the hassle of moving it is going to be way more than it'd ever bring in scrap. I'd just leave it as a monument to technology of the past. Trees will take care of it before long.

I like some of the gazebo ideas!

Yeah I'd searched online several days ago and about the only things that looked even remotely interesting to me were the Gazebos or solar cookers. Unfortunately with it being metal mesh (versus a solid dish) it kinda kills the usefulness for either. I did see on one of the links you provided a mesh dish with used CDs mounted to it to provide the reflective surface for a cooker.

Scrap steel and scrap stainless steel are both down, ......... I'd just leave it as a monument to technology of the past. Trees will take care of it before long.

Yeah.... monument to old tech. That works.

Ultimately I'll probably just leave it where it stands. It's pretty far from the house, doesn't get in the way or ruin the view. As it gets older and older I guess it will become more of a conversation piece. Fast forward 50-100 years and I'm long gone. Wonder what the owners of the home would think about it?

And yeah the trees are doing a number on it. A branch already knocked the receiver way out of position. And I think there may be a hole somewhere in the mesh.

Lol..... I went outside and checked again. Walked right up to it..... it's bigger than I remember .

I'm 6' with my shoes on, and the top of my head came to the center of the dish. So I'm guessing the dish is around 11-12' in diameter.

Use it to tune into the Galaxy 5 satellite we used to and watch all sorts of cool programs in the early 80's

It’s a big dish for sure
As an old radio guy I like it for sentimental reasons
Back in the day I ran into an Amway branded dish system, analog receiver and manual alignment control cost was zero so we played with it for a few years
Once you became familiar with the arc and bird distribution it was simple to dial in the desired bird
(Satellite) and then choose signal polarity and transponder channel and you were watching free tv
They used to have a TV guide of sorts for sat tv which was great

My dad and I watched the low speed chase with OJ
Left audio was was all police radio transmissions and the right was reporter commentary
This was straight off the uplink truck to the studios so commentary was uncensored to say the least
Cops were begging to open fire on the white bronco for sure but so many were watching from every overpass and the chill slow speed pursuit kept that from occurring.
I would imagine that those days are over with digital transmission and the different frequencies in use today

I had a complete system 20 years ago. In between the years I got rid of the receiver when I had other means of getting TV. There is no reason to remove the disk as I have lots of room. If I came across a receiver again, I sure would like to get it running as a system again.

I remember calling those "the state flower of West Virginia", but they are fairly rare even in the boonies these days.

It would make a cool patio umbrella.

Yeah, that's what I always heard them called. I don't know if it would mike a cool patio umbrella. It would certainly make for a HEAVY patio umbrella.
