Is this Yamaha worth that much?

Great amplifier and very rare. However, the seller may be an importer of Japanese market gear and this unit is likely 100v.

IIRC, the PC5002M is a cousin of the MX-10000 and is significantly cheaper but with the same performance.

I've read and heard about that seller before, but he offers local pick-up with cash payment.

If I had the dough and were looking for that amp, I would not buy it any other way than picking it up.
 
There have been threads about the "papi chulo" seller before, all right. Doesn't seem like someone I'd want to buy from.


IIRC, MarkB says the MX-10000 actually sounds BETTER than the PC5002M(pro version)/101M(audiophile version) amp. That would make it the BEST amp Yamaha ever made, at least sonically (the 5002/101M is more powerful). It was a later model, so that may well be true. It is about as rare, too, and since it is newer, shouldn't have depreciated as much due to age. For these reasons, I think it should be quite expensive. The 101M can be had in the range of $2,000 - $3,000, though, so the price on the papi chulo's unit does seem excessively high to me, at least in terms of the relative value of what you are buying.


Still, it's a VERY nice amp, from all accounts. You can read MarkB's comments on it in the archives. I don't know if any other AKers own one; they are very rare!

IIRC, Mark B got the whole Centennial set for less than what this one is offered.

I believe MarkB had mentioned in a very comprehensive thread somewhere here that there are technically subtle differences between the two but that he preferred the MX-10000 in the end over the PC5002M. You may have to ask him directly but that seems to be my recollection.

[edit] oh heh - I see arkay beat me too it! haha - I would say you could do a lot worse for 7 grand with other audiophile amps TBH...those Centennial series are really a whole different league of good.
 
i'd probably be willing to drop $3k+ for a US model that's in excellent shape. my only concern would be any NLA parts that may be lurking inside, as i don't believe that has really been discussed before.
 
I understand the temptation to buy from Jean Henry Louis,The 'catalogue' that he has is outstandingly good.

The trouble arises in that the picture that you see of the component is used repeatedly to sell models of the same component.In other words people are buying based on a photo which is not the individual component that they will be receiving.

Not a good situation if you are parting with $thousands.

The solution is to ask him to include a photo of the SERIAL NUMBER of the item that you are buying,in the Auction.

That's about the best one could do.He will still sell you an item which isn't in the photo,I suspect.

Best not to deal with any seller who relies on misrepresentative photos of what he is supposed to be selling.

I'd sell as much of my collection as needed if I had the opportunity to pick one up for $3k.

$7K, 100V? Papi? No flippin way.

BTW, I commented on this amp in the Papi Chulo thread.

P.S. Chris, I just picked up a CDX-2020! ;-) Now I just need to swap mx CX-1000 for a CX-2000 and the TX-1000 for the TX-2000 and it will all match the MX-2000(s). :D
