It's Not You, It's Me...Bands People Love, But You Don't

Last Genesis album worth a damn: Wind and Wuthering.
Triumph - too much Journey for my tastes. Except, for some reason "Blinding Light Show"
For that batter, pretty much any band that's considered "Arena Rock"
Frank Sinatra - other then 'Beyond the Sea', makes me sleepy and depressed
Chicago - sucked from day one and went downhill from there
Any Jackson, in groups or alone.
Michael Bolton - 'nuff said
Pink Floyd, The Wall, what self indulgent crap.
The Doors - well... ditto I guess
Death Metal - I lose more speakers that way....
James Taylor and anyone he slept with.
Bob Dylan
For that matter any folk from the late 60s on (except the Kingston Trio who are still amazingly good).
The Fairport Convention - Steeleye Span did it better.
Any and all music that features Women whining about, well, anything.
Leonard Bernstein - I'm not sure why. Maybe because no matter what he does, I've already got a better version.
Lee Ritenour - all sounds the same.

Most rock acts with more than a couple of records out have at least one song I may like, but there are some I find no redeeming qualities for. thinking about acts with at least a ten year life cycle for the most part. for example...

I like the Smiths, but cannot stand Morrisey
I like New Order, but not Joy Division (except...like many bands they had ONE song I like!)
Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Styx, etc at least have a song or two (or three) I like
REO Speedwagon. before "...Tune a Fish" they were "OK" and had a few songs I liked, but boy, once they found the "chick-rock" groove it was all over. "She doesn't like the tough guys" is probably the worst somewhat-popular songs EVER...even if Kevin says the word s#!t in it!

However...

Bon Jovi - I just don't get it...I can't find one redeeming quality for this act

but I have a supreme dislike for these kind of threads. If the "dead horse" smiley were still around, I'd be using it now. If I had a nickel for every time this thread was trotted out in one form or another, I'd have at least 20 bucks. and thats just since I've been around here, etc.

Credit given for a clever and disarming title though. These threads ALWAYS turn out the same. People come out and trash talk some of the best bands/Artists to walk the planet, others rightfully call bullsh!t, and so it goes.

No offense to the OP, this thread is almost always started innocently enough.

:lurk:

makes me wonder why you read them...for the same reason..we alll love to vent

I'm pretty forgiving for music that I don't care for and I would usually steer clear of these threads, too, but I saw the title and could not keep it in...

Barenaked Ladies. :thumbsdn:

Many people LOVE these guys. Everything I've heard from them makes my skin crawl and can change my mood from good to sour in three notes or less.

I've sent emails to otherwise great radio stations asking them to please stop the pain. Sadly, I cannot understand why the creator of RadioParadise likes them so much...

My description for them is:
"Sorority girls' excuse for intelligent, artsy rock."

Good fix, toze. :D

Oh, and IB4TL.

At the risk of feeding a thread that fropiler seems to think will degenerate into uncouth bashing. Also, although I'm listing bands I don't like - generally speaking - there are still one or two songs which the ones I've listed made that I do like. The figures following each band represents the fraction of their total output that I won't immediately turn off or tune out:

The Doors (10%)
Metallica (never did see the appeal. I like speed metal, but not theirs) (0%)
Lynyrd Skynyrd (5%)
Asia (Carl Palmer notwithstanding) (5%)
Journey (1%)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (0%)
Guns 'N Roses (0%)
The Ramones (0%)
Nirvana (1%)
U2 (0%)
Lou Reed (0%)
Rolling Stones (world's greatest R&R band my fuzzy backside!) (10%)
ANY 80's pop/hair mainstream "metal" band (Poison, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Whitesnake etc) (0%)

There are a lot more, but I'll stop here.

{EDIT} I forgot to mention KISS. That's like forgetting to breathe!!

Has to be Bob Seeger for me. Unlike most bands/performers that I disliked in my early years, Seeger has never really "grown" on me like some of those have. I grew so tired of the "Like a Rock" Chevy truck commercials that I consider driving sharp sticks through my eardrums;). Same with Jon Cougar Mellonhead....er... Mellencamp.

I believe I already said that. And I also believe that I stated an opinion without any personal jabs. Something you should strive for as well.

Last time I checked, the forum had rules to that effect.

I'll go with Springstain and Chilli Poppers.

Bruce always had a great backing band but as soon as he opens his mouth, off he goes. He sings worse than Sinatra.

Chilli Peppers, what I have heard, all sounds the same to me. Stop-start with the same old bridge.

On with my Nomex suit:
Rush. I know, I know...they're a musically-excellent band with a deep catalog. I just don't connect. Don't know why...don't hate them...just can't get it.
Springsteen. Jon Landau's creation has morphed into an entity of itself. Again...I can't make the connection.
Speed metal, death metal, Goth rock, industrial? Can't make the hookup. Ozzy? Deep Purple? I get them.
With a radio career nudging up against the 40 year mark (much of it in some sort of rock format), there's countless SONGS I never want to hear again. The band/artist may be someone I like...but there's so many songs that have been beaten into the ground I'm happy to avoid them.

Next up, Journey. Steve Perry? Sure I like Rush, I even like Triumph, which is essentially Rush meets Journey, but Steve Perry gets under my skin like no other singer.

Oddly enough, I put them the other way. I like Journey, I like Triumph, I just can't get into Rush. They're all virtuosos but the combination just seems like 3 guys showing off instead of a band playing together. And Geddy's voice kind of reminds me of a squawking parrot. With the fanbase they've got it must be me so I'll just go slip into my asbestos boxers.

Wow, I wasn't expecting so many responses so quickly. I really hope this doesn't degenerate into name calling. It's just a place for venting opinions and really meant to have a good time with it.

Now for more bands that make me want to puke.

The Eagles. I cannot believe that I forgot to mention these guys up front. I actually like Joe Walsh's solo stuff, but the rest of the band...well, I wish they never did get out of the Hotel California and were stabbed with steely knives...

Metallica after Cliff was crushed by the bus. Everything they put out after is like nails on a chalkboard to me. And talk about egos out of control. They cannot even keep their stories straight at this point. First they ruin Napster and now they are trying to embrace the Internet? Pick a side and stay on it for christsakes.

I agree wholeheartedly with the Elton John, post Yellow Brick Road. I don't even like Captain Fantastic. But Yellow Brick Road was a masterpiece.

To end this post, I think its great the people have differing opinions. Like RayW, at least we can agree on Triumph. LOL And I can really understand that Geddy's voice gets on peoples nerves. It reminds me of an interview I did back in college with Les Claypool where he told me, "yeah my voice can be pretty annoying, it even annoys me." I am surprised no one has listed Primus yet. I like everything up until Pork Soda, but haven't heard anything compelling since.

Wow a little surprised to find BNL in this thread. I didn't think many Americans even know who they are. That being said, they really do pander to the college aged crowd. Like most bands too, their best music isn't the pablum you find played on the radio. Gordon is always worth a listen. IMHO

Mike

Beatles
Led Zep
The Doors

The three I hate the most! Overplayed on the radio and the same 3 or 4 songs. Grinding those songs into your brain like broken pieces of glass!:bash:

Musta listened to the same radio station I did. I can't stand any of these bands (Or at least their radio staples)to this day.
