The scary thoughts are 1. We are now into the 2nd quarter of the 21st century. 2. In just 4 years, 30 years ago will mean 2000. 3. When someone says "100 years ago" I think of the 1800s and it actually means 1926!

In several conversations I have had this year, I mentioned prohibition as a reference point to remind myself of when exactly 100 years ago was.

It is - the R-2800 was a beast, and powered the F4U, Hellcat and the Republic P-47 of those I can think of immediately off the top of my head. I got to sit in a Corsair thirty-odd years ago at the Bradley Air Museum in CT - you definitely do S turns when taxiing that thing - from the cockpit when sitting three point on the ground the nose seemed to extend twenty feet out and block all forward visibility. Must have been great fun to plant on a carrier deck, especially before they tamed the weird stalling inclination (note the stall strip on the right wing in that photo) and its initial tendency to bounce on touchdown.

The really crazy thing to think about is that during WWII, these planes were for all intents and purposes largely being flown by kids in their early 20s.
Are you an ex-Navy jock? That friend of mine is a three-generation Navy pilot. Father (Hellcat), friend (A7), and son (F/A-18).

No, no such luck - never could have become a military pilot due to poor eyesight. Ate, drank and slept aviation and WWII Naval history as a kid, then eventually got a private pilot - airplane single engine land rating; also have about 30 hours in sailplanes but never finished the glider ticket. I had a Piper J-5A Cub Cruiser for a while, and sorely miss it. Seems I can have time for flying, or $$ for flying, but haven't been able to get the two in sync for many moons now...

I hope some flight time is in your future. I've heard that there is nothing like it.
